Following the success of films such as Pineapple Express and This is the End, the comedic trio of James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Danny McBride have reteamed, this time for a project that’s far removed from their studio fare.

Premiering at Venice Film Festival followed by a stop at Toronto International Film Festival, today brings the first look at the Franco-directed adaptation of William Faulkner‘s The Sound and the Fury. Also starring Jacob Loeb, Ahna O’Reilly, Tim Blake Nelson, Joey King and Loretta Devine, the film follows “the lives and passions of the Compsons, a once proud Southern family caught in a tragic spiral of loss and misfortune.”

Along with those images, which can be seen below, there’s also the first on-set snap of Franco in a new biopic, playing Michael Glatze, a former gay activist based in San Francisco who went on to denounce homosexuality and became a Christian fundamentalist. The project is from producer Gus Van Sant and directed by Justin Kelly, and will likely hit the festival circuit next year.
