For the last five years, all five of Werner Herzog‘s films have played at Toronto International Film Festival, most having their world premieres. Next month is no different as the director will show his Death Row documentary Gazing into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, a Tale of Life at the fest. We’ve provided the first stills as well as more information on the project, but now we have over seven minutes of footage. I’m going to avoid them in order to see the full thing next month, but you can watch them below.

Synopsis:

Exploring a triple homicide case in Texas, Werner Herzog (Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Grizzly Man) probes the psyches of those involved, including the 28-year-old death row inmate scheduled to die within eight days of appearing on-screen. Herzog’s inquiries unveil layers of humanity against an American Gothic landscape. As he’s so often done before, the director makes an enlightening trip out of ominous territory.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 8th to the 18th.
