After being attached to the project for nearly four years, it looks like things are finally moving ahead with the Ellen Page-led Freeheld. Julianne Moore and Zach Galifianakis have joined the independent drama. which is coming from Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) and a script by Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia, The Painted Veil). Based on the 20007 documentary, it tells the dramatic true story of Stacie Andree (Page), who, several years ago, wished to receive the benefits left by her partner (Moore) upon her imminent death. However, state laws in New Jersey would have prevented the proper funds from coming her way; this led to a crusade for equality which proved to help shape the state’s treatment of similar cases. Production kicks off this summer with Galifianakis playing Garden State Equality activist Steven Goldstein. [THR]
Next up, Jason Blum has yet another horror film in development, which this one comes with a few surprises. The Veil is from a script by Robert Ben Garant, best known for his work on Reno 911! and Night at the Museum, making for a a major departure for the writer. THR now reports that a cast has been found for the film, which comes from Phil Joanou (The Punisher: Dirty Laundry, Gridiron Gang), with Thomas Jane and Jessica Alba jumping aboard. The story tracks a religious cult who commit suicide and their secrets are unveiled when Alba’s character returns to the compound thirty years later as a documentary filmmaker, after running away from it when she was five years old. Production kicks off in April.
Lastly, after a strong year with Drinking Buddies, Her, and Rush (we’ll forget about Burt Wonderstone), Olivia Wilde has set up another project, one she’ll star in and produce. According to Deadline, the actress’s next project will be the psychological thriller Meadowland, coming from by Reed Morano (cinematographer behind Shut Up and Play the Hits, Frozen River, Kill Your Darlings, The Skeleton Twins) and a script by Chris Rossi. The story follows Wilde as woman whose life is altered as she deals with the disappearance of her son in unexpected ways. Production kicks off this July.
