Taking it rather easy for the last few years, Eddie Murphy hasn’t been seen onscreen in anything but a Brett Ratner movie and a long-delayed comedy. But now a TV pilot has sparked some interest to bring back one of the actor’s most iconic characters to the big screen.

After employing Tropic Thunder star Brandon T. Jackson as his son in the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop pilot for CBS, Paramount wants Murphy back as Axel Foley for a feature film. According to Deadline, the studio has set scripting duo of Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remake) to begin a draft.

For those not familiar with the franchise that kicked off in 1984 with direction from Martin Brest, the story followed a Detroit cop who came to the titular town. While other incarnations came from the late Tony Scott and John Landis, there’s no word yet on who will be helming here. Out of the many properties Hollywood is returning to, this is one we wouldn’t mind seeing, especially after the scripters crafted one of the most entertaining actioners as of late.
