The end of the world is certainly coming back in style. We’ve seen a number of different takes on the apolcapyse including Lars von Trier‘s stark Melancholia, Lorene Scafaria‘s recently released dramedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and then Seth Rogen will show us The End of the World comedy-style next year, along with Edgar Wright and his At World’s End. Not enough for you?

THR lets us know that Drew Barrymore is set to get behind the came again following her 2009 debut Whip It for a film titled The End. Although it has the shortest character count compared the above titles, it will perhaps be bigger in scope as the film writted by Heroes producer Aron Eli Coleite follows characters amongst “multiple story lines as they reconcile their fate on their last day on Earth.”

For those expecting some devastating take, the film is actual said to be “uplifting and humanistic” as people attempt to fix their  personal differences before Earth is destroyed. Sounds harmonious. It’s also revealed that Barrymore will not be starring, unlike in her debut, but characters will include a” 60-something radio personality in London intent on broadcasting until the end, a father trying to make it through the chaos in Tokyo to reach his wife and baby, and a teenage couple in the American Midwest being pulled in different directions by their families.”

Being mixed on Barrymore’s debut, as it felt by-the-numbers, I’m glad the actress/director is stepping outside the norm for her follow-up. While there were moments of levity in Seeking a Friend, it didn’t quite nail the relationship aspect, so hopefully Barrymore can do so here. As for her next on-screen appearance, nothing is confirmed but she can be seen in the whale tale Big Miracle, out now.

What do you think about Barrymore’s next directorial effort? Ready for another end of the world movie?
