Made for just a few million dollars, the horror film Sinister is one of the most profitable projects of the year, as it closes in on a $50 million gross. Now for their next project, the duo of Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill have been tasked with a blockbuster of sorts over at CBS Films.

According to a press release, the studio has hired the team to write Deus Ex: Human Revolution, an adaptation of the popular videogame from Square Enix, with Derrickson directing. CBS picked up the project this summer, with help from producers Roy Lee (The Departed, The Woman in Black) and Adrian Askarieh – who is behind many other videogame adaptations including the previous Hitman and the upcoming Just Cause and Kane & Lynch. The project will be based on the 2011 iteration of the game, which was a prequel to the 2000 original and you can see a synopsis below.

Game is set in 2027, when multinational corporations have grown beyond the control of national governments. Film will follow an ex-SWAT security specialist who must learn to embrace the high-tech prostheses that replace much of his body in order to unravel a global conspiracy that involves an attack on a biotechnology firm tied to developing human enhancements.

With other promising videogame adaptations of Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell coming, it seems like the tired genre is getting some much-needed new lifeblood, especially with this talented duo joining. Derrickson added, “Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence. By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one hell of a movie. Cargill and I can’t wait to bring it to the big screen.” We can’t wait either.

Are you looking forward to this adaptation?
