Clive Owen and Billy Crudup to Lead Guillaume Canet-Directed ‘Blood Ties’; James Caan and Mila Kunis Also Join

Written by on March 16, 2012

The Gods have smiled upon Guillaume Canet. (And I’m not even referencing his marriage to Marion Cotillard.) Rather, THR informs us that his developing crime film, Blood Ties, has started to round out its cast, and — should the first sentence have been a little tip — things are looking good. Although we heard in early November that Mark Wahlberg was circling one of two lead parts in the picture, he’s out of the equation. Canet need not fret, though.

That’s because Billy Crudup and Clive Owen are taking the primary roles, joining a cast that already has Cotillard and Zoe Saldana on board. If that weren’t enough — and I’d posit it already is — James Caan and Mila Kunis have also signed, while Matthias Schoenaerts (Bullhead) is being pursued.

Based on the French novel Les Liens Du Sang (which was adapted into a 2008 film that starred Canet), Blood Ties — co-written with James Gray — centers on “a younger brother (Crudup) who has to ask his convict older brother (Owen) to go back into the underworld to help out the family.” Kunis and Cotillard are taking love interest roles, while Caan will, in all likelihood, play the father to the protagonists. (That’s just a guess on my own part, however.)

Here’s what makes this good casting even better: I haven’t been too keen on either actors’ recent career choices, be they middling indies (Thin Ice) or meatheaded action romps (Killer Elite), and Blood Ties sounds like the kind of strong, dramatic material we all know either can thrive in. Put a good cast around and promising creative team behind them, and we are in business.

Shooting is looking to begin next month.

Do you see any potential in this casting?
