Billy Crudup, Laurence Fishburne, Selena Gomez, Anton Yelchin & More Set For William H. Macy’s ‘Rudderless’

Written by on April 1, 2013

Following more than two decades’ worth of experience with some top-notch directorial talent, William H. Macy is finally picking up a camera and making his own movie. As we’re talking about a relatively private man, though, his attraction to most projects wouldn’t be immediately obvious — other than what I’m sure came down to “okay, let’s try it out!” — but we’re here, and its lineup of players is quite nice. Sound like enough? Indeed.

A press release has announced an inaugural feature (excepting an HBO special) for the actor-turned-helmer, Rudderless, “a musical drama about the power of a parent’s love” that he’s conceived with Casey Twenter and Jeff Robison; the latter two have since written a full script. (“[M]usical drama, by the way, more-likely-than-not connotes a drama which revolves around music, not… the other possible direction.) Presuming that Macy‘s role gives him central star status, he’ll play a father whose grieving process reaches a head upon finding music composed by his dead son; in “hoping to find peace,” he starts a group that make their way with these unperformed pieces.

If it’s merely a vehicle for his talent as a thespian, so be it. (We could do worse!) However the story ends up shaking out, Rudderless will also include the talent of Billy Crudup, Selena Gomez (as the son’s former girlfriend? just a thought) Laurence Fishburne, Felicity Huffman, and Anton Yelchin — and it’s hard to go completely wrong with some of them on your side. Produced by Amberdale and Unified Pictures, Rudderless will commence shooting in April.

What are your thoughts on Macy getting into the directing business?
