Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig Are ‘Skeleton Twins’ In Duplass-Produced Comedy

Written by on November 7, 2012

You could, correctly, say a Saturday Night Live reunion is in store, but we’re also dealing with two actors who’ve participated in at least a few other projects — maybe we have a Knocked Up / Adventureland / Paul reunion, too. Anyway, Variety tell us Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, no strangers to one another, will be seen in a Duplass brothers-produced comedy, The Skeleton Twins, set to be directed by Craig Johnson from a script he co-wrote with Black Swan‘s Mark Heyman.

They’re expected to star as Milo and Maggie, an estranged pair of twins who, unbeknownst to themselves, feign death on the same day. Through some means that will be illustrated at another point, this leads to a reunion in which either attempts to pin down their own mistakes, the ways in which they’ve reverberated throughout their lives, and led them to this point. Turns out it has something to do with love: Maggie’s time with a kind-hearted “nature frat boy,” Lance (Luke Wilson), and Milo’s experience with an ex-teacher, Rich, are both damaged. Knowing this, they grow closer to one another but still need to really fix things in able to get back in shape.

It’s early, yes, but The Skeleton Twins‘ first layout gives the impression of something a bit more dramatic — or, in some way, comedically dramatic — than what’s sold on the surface. It’s possible, this early out, that its “comedy” label is a little misleading, though I’m of the mind it’ll probably skirt the line much like a lot of Duplass work. (My conflicted feelings about their output doesn’t actually impact me here. This is a very good thing.) Let’s not worry about things like that, though: We’re getting Hader and Wiig as the stars of another movie. Things are fine.

Production will start in a few weeks’ time.

How does The Skeleton Twins lay its ground in this first exposure?
