From Jeff Nichols to Sean Durkin to Drake Doremus, there were many success stories back at Sundance Film Festival 2011 and while all those directors are in some stage of their follow-up (with two having been completed), we’ve now got news on another. Mike Cahill delivered the small-scale sci-fi drama Another Earth starring Brit Marling (who also debuted her stellar Sound of My Voice there) and now Hollywood.com has an update on what we’ll be seeing next from the helmer.

According to the site, pre-production on his follow-up is coming together with Half Nelson and  The Place Beyond The Pines producers Verisimilitude, as well as Another Earth and Terri producer Phaedon Papadopoulos. Titled i Origins, the project will feature a doctor who is nearing a history-changing scientific discovery which all relies on a single person, a poverty-stricken girl from India named Salomina. Check out an extended synopsis below.

This film, a second feature from award-winning, breakout filmmaker Mike Cahill (Another Earth) connects the lives of the most unlikely people from around the globe. One doctor, on the brink of a scientific discovery which will have historical ramifications, travels to India to search for the one person, a young Indian girl, who can prove or disprove his theory. The story follows the incredible journeys that bring these strangers together, and proves there is no separating matters of science and matters of the heart.

Shooting will likely begin next year in New York City and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw it show up at Sundance 2014.

Are you looking forward to the next film from Cahill?
