Amber Heard has been on the rise recently with roles in the popular comedies Pineapple Express and Zombieland, as well as a starring role in last year’s Drive Angry 3D and now a substantial role in the Johnny Depp starrer The Rum Diary. Consequently, you would assume she’s working on many films due to popular demand, but up until now she’s only had Aram Rappaport‘s Syrup on the horizon.
Now, however, Deadline is reporting that she will take the female lead role in Albert Hughes‘ Motor City (not to be confused with his brother Allen Hughes‘ upcoming Broken City), a revenge tale in which a recently released convict hunts down the people who framed him.
Sounds like pretty formulaic stuff, but it will be interesting to see what Albert Hughes does with his first feature film that is not co-directed with his brother Allen (who is working seperately on the aforementioned noir tale). Another up and coming star, Dominic Cooper, has taken the male lead role and Chad St. John has penned the script.
Heard apparently auditioned against many other young actresses (whose identities remain unknown) for this role, which could be her first major role in a darker, more serious film by a talented team. Personally, although I have not seen her in many large roles, I think she has some genuine talent, more than just the looks (and there’s no doubting she has those, she used to be a model after all) some of her female Hollywood counterparts can claim to.
A release date for Motor City seems a way off, considering shooting details have not been announced yet, but one should presumably expect this to come relatively soon after Allen Hughes‘ Broken City, which currently holds a tentative release date of January 18th, 2013.
Do you think Amber Heard is the right choice for this role?
