Concluding its rather epic box office run at over $425 million worldwide, we were rather surprised when the French drama The Intouchables was left off the Academy’s list of five for Best Foreign Language film, but it will certainly have another chance at acclaim, as The Weinstein Company is putting together its cast and crew for a Hollywood remake.

Previously thought to be helmed by Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, we’ve got word today that there has been some behind-the-scenes shifts. According to Deadline, the Weinsteins will be using Feig’s script, but instead have brought on Tom Shadyac (Bruce Almighty, Liar Liar, Ace Ventura) to take on the remake of Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano‘s original hit.

It’s a bit of an odd choice, but Shadyac (who has recently ventured into self-reflexive documentary mode) could be a good fit for the funny side of this drama. Colin Firth is still set to star as our disabled lead, while there have been many rumors for the caretaker role originated by Omar Sy (Chris Tucker has been the latest name to pop up, and perhaps a top choice for TWC after their success with Silver Linings Playbook). Check back as we get confirmation on the cast, for the film likely hitting screens in 2014.

Do you think Shadyac is a good choice? Are you a fan of the original?
