And thus begins the first post on this site in which we speculate on what role Matthew Modine will be playing in a movie.
The casting of Matthew Modine in The Dark Knight Rises is something that’s been – like everything else about this movie – shrouded in mystery. His character is named Nixon, and that obviously brings to mind things like corruption, greed, arrogance and a sweaty upper lip. Still, it only remains a name. And while there’s a good chance that he’s only a minor part of the overall film, speculation has, to no one’s surprise, arisen about just who he is.
Well, Showbiz411 may have learned what that part will entail. Their sources apparently say that the character will be “a politician and a key villain.” The name certainly matches the part – after all, Richard Nixon isn’t someone whose legacy has gotten any better over the past several decades. We do know that the character’s scenes will only be shot in a studio in London, which means that he could appear exclusively on television screens or only sit behind a desk.
Personally, I’m not that convinced this is who he’ll end up playing. The idea of having an antagonistic politician named Nixon feels way too on the nose for Christopher Nolan. Plus, don’t forget that he already had a villainous politician with Harvey Dent/Two-Face in The Dark Knight, so he may not want to tread the same ground. So, while it’s just as likely that this is in fact the part (because I have no idea either way), I’m remaining a little skeptical on this whole story for now.
The Dark Knight Rises will hit theaters July 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Juno Temple, Josh Pence, Daniel Sunjata, Nestor Carbonell, Matthew Modine, Tom Conti, Joey King, Brett Cullen, and Chris Elli.
Do you think this will be Modine’s part? Do you care who he ends up playing?
