Oliver Stone still has the influence to pull together a strong cast for his movies, and Savages is building one up right now. It’s already got Aaron Johnson,Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Salma Hayek, Benicio del Toro, Demian Bichir, Emile Hirsch, Uma Thurman, and John Travolta, which is certainly a good lineup of actors. THR has learned of another addition, that being Joel David Moore.

Probably best known for his supporting work in movies like Dodgeball or Avatar, he’s been cast as “an expert computer geek who moves on from a Washington think tank to the marijuana business.” The movie, based on the novel by Don Winslow, follows two pot dealers (Johnson and Kitsch) who have to recuse their friend, O (Lively), who’s been kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel, and is being held for ransom so that the two of them will work for the group. Throw in things like Hayek‘s cartel member getting attached to O, and Travolta‘s “burned out DEA agent,” and things will probably get a little hectic.

Written by Winslow, Stone, and Shane Salerno, the film seems like the first real “Oliver Stone” movie in over a decade, and that’s what really has me excited — but then you add on this cast, and things look even better. Further helping things out is the fact that Moore certainly fits the kind of role he’s been given; just think back to Avatar if you don’t know what I mean. I really, really hope that the director hasn’t lost his spark from doing movies like World Trade Center or a sequel to Wall Street, because if he still has it, then this could be a pretty entertaining ride. Shooting will begin on the film next month, and a release is expected for 2012.

Are you looking forward to Savages? Have you seen any of Moore’s other work, and did you like it?
