One of the most famous men in the political history of the United States is J. Edgar Hoover, who is best known for being the first head of the FBI. Another thing he’s known for is the fact that he may have had something of a fondness for dressing up in the clothes of the opposite sex. For some bizarre reason, this has led many to believe that he was also a homosexual, (also leading to the nickname “Gay Edgar Hoover”) and the new film about his career and life, set to be directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Dustin Lance Black, the latter being the Oscar winning screenwriter for Milk, is apparently going to feature this aspect of his life.

And while it seems like Leonardo DiCaprio will be playing the main role of everybody’s favorite racist, cross-dressing FBI leader, Joaquin Phoenix may be getting the more interesting role of playing his gay lover. This comes from a story in NYMag (via CinemaBlend), and while right now it only stands as a rumor, it seems like a likely choice. Now that he seems to be coming back from whatever he was doing, Phoenix will probably start acting in roles other than playing himself, and this is the kind of role he would have taken on before…whatever that was.

The character in question is Clyde Tolson, who was Hoover’s assistant and protégé during the formative years of the FBI, and the two often vacationed together, and this, coupled with the fact that they constantly went out to lunch and nightclubs together, along with Hoover’s known cross-dressing, has lead many to believe that there was a homosexual relationship between the two. The picture below shows the two of them on vacation.

The sexual ambiguity of one of the most important forces in American politics during the 1950’s and 1960’s is something that I happen to find very interesting, and with the two of these talented actors taking on these roles, I would find it very difficult to not be even a little interested in this project. Fingers crossed that this role and this movie comes to fruition as planned.

What do you think of Joaquin Phoenix taking on this role, and possibly starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio?
