When it was announced last year that legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog (Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Rescue Dawn) was remaking Abel Ferrara’s 1990 film Bad Lieutenant with Nicolas Cage as the star, many were surprised. After all, why would a legendary director such as Herzog do a remake with Nicolas Cage of a film that is actually sort of terrible in the first place? And what would the film be like? Well, the new trailer recently surfaced online (shoddy YouTube only, sorry folks) and perhaps now we have a taste of what to expect. Check it out in horrible quality after the jump.
Three words come to mind after viewing this trailer: What. The. Fuck. I’ve watched this thing like ten times and I’m still amazed at what I see. This looks like a direct-to-DVD movie simply by the quality of the video, and even discounting that, everything in it looks insane. This trailer needs to be watched to fully appreciate what’s on display here. I have a feeling that many Wicker Man style YouTube videos will be sprouting up within a short period of time, and maybe just from the trailer. And yet, this has become one of my most anticipated movies of the year. I can only see this going two ways: either the entire crew of this movie has something up their sleeves and will completely surprise us with the finished product, or this will be a disaster of epic, epic proportions. I can’t wait. In the meantime, I’m gonna get back to my lucky crack pipe.
What did you think of this trailer? Does it have you curious for the end product, and what impression does it give you of the film overall?
