UPDATE: Variety confirms “Sunjata will play a courageous special forces operative.” They also add two more names to the list, saying Diego Klattenhoff (Homeland, Firebired) has “been offered the part of a rookie cop who is looking to make a difference.” Burn Gorman (Layer Cake, Torchwood, Red Lights) is also “being eyed for a supporting role in the superhero pic.” Check out the original story below.
Casting news for The Dark Knight Rises just keeps coming our way, with the most recent being Josh Pence on Friday, presumably playing a young Ra’s al Ghul, the role Liam Neeson portrayed in Batman Begins. Now, the next addition to the cast is someone you may know, but who he’s playing remains a mystery.
That actor is Daniel Sunjata, who’s likely best known for his work on the TV series Rescue Me, as well as the mini-series The Bronx is Burning, in which he portrayed Reggie Jackson. News of his involvement was picked up by TheTrackingBoard (via /Film), but it’s not clear who he is. All they know is that he’s “rumored to play an ‘important character to the story.’” Really, that could mean anything.
We already know that Tom Hardy is playing Bane and Anne Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle (likely to become Catwoman), but much of the other new additions remain shrouded in secrecy. Juno Temple might be Kyle’s friend? Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Alberto Falcone? Hey, Marion Cotillard could possibly even show up! We don’t really know who’s playing who, and we might not get an answer for a while. Let’s just hope Christopher Nolan can sort them all out and not give this movie trilogy its Spider-Man 3.
In the meantime, I can say that I’ve seen Sunjata in the occasional thing here and there (such as a few episodes of Rescue Me), and I think that he’s a good actor. I think that he’ll lend a nice presence to the overall film, and he deserves to be seen by more people. My feelings of him possessing talent still don’t give me a clue as to who he’s playing, but at least I know that he could very likely play the role well. And isn’t that what really matters, in the end?
The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 2012.
What do you think of his casting? Have you seen him in anything, and who do you think he’ll be playing?
