Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld

Were you guys fans of the last Takashi Miike movie? No, not that one. No, he actually made another one right around that time. As you might remember, the most recent title was… wait, no, it appears something else was released right around the time that our review was published. Good news, then, for those who always want more from the helmer and bad news for those who struggle to keep track: we’ve recently noticed that there teasers for two new efforts, each of which, we can only assume, were shot in three days’ time on some sort of drug-fueled binge.

Although neither are subtitled (one features a brief bit of English-language dialogue), the footage found in either will make clear that he’s working in different registers on either end. One, Lion Standing Against the Wind, is a sweeping drama about missionaries working in Africa, while the other is called Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld. News of the latter came in this past April, when we kerned the project would follow Kagayama, “a feeble but loyal underling to legendary yakuza boss Kamiura, who turns out to be a vampire.” Before the boss is killed by an international assassin, he bites into Kageyama, turning him to the dark side and on the path “to get revenge against a formidable team of assassins.” Coupled with news that, in May, he’ll begin shooting a manga adaptation by the title of Terra Formars, it’s clear that nothing is stopping Miike at the moment. Lion Standing Against the Wind will hit Japan on March 14, while Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld is set to arrive there on June 20.

What do you think of these teasers and the news of another Miike project? Are you hoping to keep up with him?
