I’m loving this recent wave of original, creative science fiction that’s been occupying art house and multiplex theaters over the past few years. The genre, admittedly, isn’t my favorite, but my outlook on it would be a whole lot better if we were getting movies like Moon about ten years ago.

But we’re getting them when we’re getting them, and Upside Down is the latest entry into this mini movement. Led by Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst, the film — written and directed by Juan Diego Solanas — takes place in a world which is half right side-up, the other half inverted. (Or is it the other way around for people in the inverted section?) Based on the trailer from Canal+ (via /Film), Upside Down is going in a romantic direction; that’s frequently needed in a story requiring suspension (that’s a pun, I guess) of disbelief, but at least they seem to be doing it right. Even if we didn’t have that, though, the aesthetic design of the world just looks so interesting and enticing — if a little stomachache-inducing.

Synopsis: Adam (Sturgess) is a seemingly ordinary guy in a very extraordinary universe. He lives humbly trying to make ends meet, but his romantic spirit holds on to the memory of a girl he met once upon a time from another world, an inverted affluent world with its own gravity, directly above but beyond reach… a girl named Eve (Dunst). Their childhood flirtation becomes an impossible love. But when he catches a glimpse of grown up Eve on television, nothing will get in the way of getting her back… not even the laws of science.
