Considering nearly ten separate projects involving James Franco hits screens in some form or another last year, a few had to be held over until 2014. One of many features arriving this year is Maladies, a film that’s had a long road to hit screens. With shooting kicking off way back in late 2010, the drama finally premiered at Berlin Film Festival last year and will hit VOD and theaters next month, with the first official trailer arriving today.

Written and directed by Carter (yes, just Carter), the film also starring Catherine Keener, David Strathairn, Alan Cumming and Fallon Goodson, follows a talented and successful actor who retires at a young age due to a perceived mental illness. Now living in a small town with his deranged sister and his best friend, we watch as the array of characters interact. We can’t say this trailer is too enticing, but with a strong cast, maybe it’ll be worth a VOD rent. One can check out the theatrical trailer below, along with new stills.

A daring new film from internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Carter, MALADIES charts the struggles of an unstable former soap opera star (James Franco) in 1960’s New York as he tries to restart his floundering creative career. Hoping to find clarity and new purpose as a writer, he holes up with his eccentric sister at the seaside home of their best friend (Catherine Keener). But as he disappears further into his own mind, reality begins to slip through his grasp. Featuring an award-winning ensemble, including David Straithairn and Alan Cumming, MALADIES is a heartfelt but defiantly unconventional exploration of the creative mind.

Maladies opens on March 21st in theaters and on VOD four days later.
