A staple of the Toronto International Film Festival, I saw director Jason Reitman there a number of times this year. But he attended only for leisure, as his newest film Young Adult has skipped the festival circuit altogether and will head straight to theaters. We now have our first glimpse at footage from the drama which stars Charlize Theron, Patton Oswalt, Patrick Wilson and Elizabeth Reaser.

The Thank You For Smoking and Up In The Air director is re-teaming with Oscar-winning Juno writer Diablo Cody for this feature and it looks darker than their previous work. Cody’s “quirkiness” also seems to be toned down and while it looks like a great lead performance from Theron, who is playing a character with some rough edges. I’m looking forward to Oswalt most, who has shown he can do drama with Big Fan. Check out the trailer below via Apple.

Update: /Film also posted an “alternate” trailer, that is a little dirtier. Check it out below.

Synopsis:

Academy Award(R) winner Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either.

Young Adult hits theaters on December 9th, 2011.
