Update: The documentary is now available to stream online.

Well, this is a nice surprise. For a man whose prolific career seems to go through peaks and valleys, Woody Allen is certainly on a high this year. His Midnight in Paris is one of the most praised films of the year as well a box-office smash hit and he has his sights set on Oscars. To celebrate the Hollywood icon’s life, executive producer and frequent Curb Your Enthusiasm director Robert B. Weide has engineered a sprawling, 3.5-hour documentary that is set to air over two nights on PBS.

Part of the American Masters series, the Woody Allen: A Documentary is produced by Brett Ranter (hey, he can do something right!), and features footage of Weide following Allen himself from production on You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger all the way through the Cannes premiere last May of his latest, not to mention a wealth of archive material from Allen’s entire life.

For such a private director, I’m interested to see just how deep they go. The doc also features interviews from Martin Scorsese, Josh Brolin, Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas, Larry David, Scarlett Johansson, Diane Keaton, Sean Penn, Martin Landau and many other collaborators and friends.
