‘Top of the Lake’ Trailer – Jane Campion’s Sundance Mini-Series Gets Partial Reveal

We rarely, if ever, cover TV-related items around these here parts, no matter how many of our favorite craftsmen are working their way into the lesser medium (David Fincher and Steven Soderbergh being very recent, awfully prime examples). Jane Campion and her mini-series, Top of the Lake, can, for a couple of reasons, be taken as a rare exception to this rule: one, its mini-series setting allows for the narrative shape we’re more traditionally accustomed to; and, two, the Sundance premiere it was afforded gives Lake something, anything resembling cinema. Welcome to the grey zone.

Looking at the first trailer throws out waves of promise, especially with viewers coming out positive last month, though not much about it helps one — or, me, at least — distinguish this from the likes of, say, The Killing, save for the fact that this doesn’t sound to be an abominable attempt at creating mystery. But Campion adds to the positive side of the scale, as does her cast, led by Elisabeth Moss, Peter Mullan, and Holly Hunter, all three of whom impress even when pilfered and conveniently placed for the sake of advertising.

Synopsis:

“‘Top of the Lake‘ is a powerful and haunting mystery about the search for happiness in a paradise where honest work is hard to find. Set in the remote mountains of New Zealand, the story follows the disappearance of a twelve-year-old, five months pregnant, who was last seen standing chest deep in a frozen lake. Robin Griffin (Moss) is a gutsy but inexperienced detective called in to investigate Tui’s case. During the investigation, she collides with Matt Mitcham (Mullan), the missing girl’s father and local drug lord, and GJ (Hunter), a guru at a local women’s camp. Robin will find this the case that tests her limits and sends her on a journey of self-discovery.”

Top of the Lake will premiere on the Sundance Channel March 18.

What are your impressions from this preview? Any plans to watch Lake?
