If Sam Raimi‘s original vision went according to plan, we’d be getting a Robert Downey Jr.-led Oz the Great and Powerful this weekend, but instead a new theatrical trailer for his latest blockbuster will have to suffice. Attached to Disney’s latest tentpole this weekend is a new look at their summer kick-off superhero film, Iron Man 3, and it’s now landed online for your viewing pleasure.

Directed by Kiss Kiss Bang Bang‘s Shane Black, he recently discussed where he sees the future of the franchise headed with Premiere Magazine. “I have the feeling that the story that we have developed for Iron Man 3 actually concluded a trilogy, while [also] leaving the door open to a fourth,” Black said. “I had a lot of discussions on this subject: ‘Is that it is the last Iron Man for Robert?’ Something tells me that it will not be the case, and will be seen in a fourth, or fifth… But I can be a little excited.”

With The Avengers likely continuing until our heroes are in wheelchairs, I have to agree with Black, but the idea that there may be some temporary conclusion in this upcoming entry has us more intrigued. Check out the new action-packed trailer below, revealing more of the plot, for the film also starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley.

Synopsis:

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 arrives on May 3rd, 2013.
