In Hollywood, 2011 should be renamed the year of Ryan Gosling. The actor is skyrocketing his career in three very different ways, showing his comedic side in the highly enjoyable Crazy, Stupid, Love. this weekend, then he is in one of my favorite films of the year as a complete bad-ass in Drive this September. Soon after that he has The Ides of March, directed by George Clooney and also starring the actor. The political drama was selected to open the Venice Film Festival, as well as play in the Toronto International Film Festival.

Based on Beau Willimon‘s play Farragut North, the film stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood. Judging from the first trailer below it brings a smile to my face that Gosling is the main character in this thriller. I’m always glad when studios are producing adult-focused dramas, and this looks to be more Good Night, Good Luck territory for Clooney rather than Leatherheads. It’ll be on my must-see list at Toronto. Check out the trailer below via Yahoo.

Synopsis:

The Ides of March takes place during the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary, when an up-and-coming campaign press secretary (Ryan Gosling) finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate’s shot at the presidency.

The Ides of March hits theaters October 7th, 2011.
