Now may not be the ideal moment to admit that I’ve never actually seen Despicable Me — it was all about Inception in July of 2010, kids — and the teaser for its follow-up has left me pretty comfortable in that decision. I can acknowledge that the “minions” were a big hit when the original came out, inspiring everything from plush toys to IHOP tie-ins, yet it’s hard for a newcomer like myself to do anything other than hit mute when a simplified version of “Barbara Ann” and a partyblower enter the proceedings. (I’m also kind of a grouch, if that helps.)
Watch the teaser below (via Apple):
With Steve Carell and Jason Segel being joined by a few newcomers, such as Al Pacino, Despicable Me 2 opens on July 3rd, 2013.
Have you seen the original, and were you a fan? Is anyone else unfamiliar with the series also immediately turned off?

In theaters now, Ivan Reitman‘s new film, Draft Day, does quite a bit with a hard subject. Part of that is the writing, but a lot of the success on screen is due to the amassing of talent Reitman manages and the flash he implants into ordinary scenes. The life of a GM during a tumultuous and pressure-packed [...]
