I’ll be upfront: if The Monk wasn’t led by one of my favorite actors, it’s almost certain that the trailer would go unwritten about. But, when I hear about a gothic horror picture starring Vincent Cassel as a monk who battles evil spirits (as opposed to just spreading the Lord’s word), I’m totally game to look at an 85-second trailer. Even at its worst, that could still be taken as a sign of courtesy.
Now, if only we could tell what even transpires here. There’s a monk, needless to say, and some strange-faced creature haunting people, as well as wonderfully portentous text about how evil spirits are on the loose. All of that is sort of a yawn, though, on the other hand, I can lend some credit to director Dominik Moll for delivering striking images in this short glimpse of a larger piece — all of which is not enough to make me care about what’s happening with The Monk as a whole, but take that for something. Maybe it’ll help us forget the fact that it premiered in its native country during the summer of 2011.
The trailer can be seen below:
The Monk will open in limited release and hit VOD on March 8th.
