With the December month becoming an increasingly busy marketplace for film, for the past few years, Paramount has opted for thriller entries to grab the eyes of audiences. It worked well with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which hit a franchise-high gross, but last year’s Jack Reacher struggled to cross the $80 million domestic mark. They are back this December, however, with a proven franchise.

Following the first trailer for the latest Tom Clancy entry Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a new international one has landed, which puts star Chris Pine amongst more global action, attempting to outgun Kenneth Branagh (also serving as director here). It doesn’t look like it’ll break the mold, but it could warrant a worthy escapist viewing. Featuring more footage, check it out below for the film also starring Keira Knightley and Kevin Costner.

The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner). When Ryan believes he’s uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that’s more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley).

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit opens on December 25th, 2013.
