Filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia’s horror comedy Witching and Bitching was a certified hit in his native country of Spain and a stand-out selection at TIFF’s Midnight Madness series. Thanks to an acquisition deal through IFC Midnight, American audiences will finally get to see the film, and a trailer just hit the web to offer a taste of all the wackiness to come.

Starring Hugo Silva (The Last Days) and Mario Casas (I Want You), the Spanish-French coproduction follows a group of small-time robbers who skip town following a successful, albeit messy heist. After taking refuge in the dark, sinister forests of French Basque Country, it soon becomes apparent that evading the authorities is the least of their worries. Based on the trailer, which contains plenty of flying cars, bullets, and bodies, the hijinks that follow are about bananas as it gets. While our Fantastic Fest review of the film was less than glowing (calling it “disjointedly entertaining”) I’m hoping that this, along with the much acclaimed vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, signals a new era of original horror comedies. Synopsis:

When your marriage has you on the brink and your bank account in red, it’s time to rob a Cash-for-Gold shop. That’s the last-ditch decision made by a group of desperate guys led by divorced dad JOSÉ. They make it out of the shop with a bag full of 25,000 gold wedding rings and flag down a cab. So do they run south to Morocco? Not easy getting through with a cab… Looks like it’s north to France.

The guys enter the impenetrable forests of Basque Country, home to ancient covens and witchery. They run head-on with a horde of crazed women who feed on human flesh. Trapped in a mysterious mansion, the witches try to seize the rings at all cost and to rip out our heroes’ souls to boot.

Witching and Bitching opens in theaters and VOD on June 13th.
