Terrence Malick’s Next Film To Start Production In September; ‘Tree of Life’ Remains a Mystery

Being one of the most elusive filmmakers working today, Terrence Malick is able to attract attention when he announces a new film. In 37 years he’s only released four films, with his fifth, The Tree of Life, supposedly coming out this year. The fact that it hasn’t yet been released is why it’s so surprising that he’s already announced work on a new film, with a main cast hired, and, according to Tulsa World (via /Film), auditions have already been held, and filming may begin in September. ‘The Tree of Life’ Won’t Premiere Until Cannes 2011?

New York Film Festival committee member, ex-Variety employee and current Indiewire reviewer/blogger Todd McCarthy just published a post updating us in his adventures with the NYFF. One of the films that was rumored to be ready for the fest was the much-anticipated The Tree of Life, directed by Terrence Malick and starring Sean Penn and Brad Pitt. It missed the fest deadline and now we can only hope for a release date this year. McCarthy said that will not be the case. Check out his statement below. Read the full story

The Invincible ‘Tree of Life’ Gets a PG-13 Rating

The Invincible ‘Tree of Life’ Gets a PG-13 Rating

Continued signs of life for the next Terrence Malick project – this is a good thing. The Tree of Life, written and directed by Malick and starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, was given a PG-13 rating by the MPAA. This means there’s a finished product out there finished enough to rate. [/Film]

Despite Apparition’s current woes, The Tree of Life seems to be solid and still steady for a late 2010 Oscar-fueled release. And while there’s been no word as to which/if any film festival Malick’s fifth feature will premiere at, the more that’s written about it the better it’s chances seem to coming out with distribution and champions behind it.

After all, this is a Terrence Malick film. It wouldn’t be one if it wasn’t difficult to get into theaters.

Are you exited for The Tree of Life? Will it get released this year? Under Apparition’s name?

Apparition Loses 60% Of Workforce, But Still ‘Tree of Life’ Survives

Independent film’s most recent cautionary tale, Apparition, may still have a life to live – they’ll just half to kill off about half their ship to keep on keeping on. Ever since the surprise exit of Bob Berney, co-founder of the independent distribution company, the other half of that equation, Bill Pohlad, has been reeling to get Apparition back on its feet. In order to do this, Pohlad has let go 15 Apparition employees, or 60 percent of his workforce. [Deadline]

McAdams and Tatum To Star In ‘The Vow’

McAdams and Tatum To Star In ‘The Vow’

Cinematical has brought word that Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum will star in The Vow, an upcoming romantic drama from writer-director Michael Sucsy (Grey Gardens). McAdams (The Notebook) and Tatum (Dear John) have both starred in Nicholas Sparks adaptations in the past, although this one, thankfully, is not. Sucsy collaborated on the script – which has reportedly been in the works for over a decade – with Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, a screenwriting duo whose previous credits include Never Been Kissed, He’s Just Not That Into You, and Valentine’s Day.

The Vow will be based on a true story that follows a newlywed couple in New Mexico (Tatum and McAdams) who get into a car crash. When the wife awakes from a coma, she has lost her memory of the marriage, and it is up to Tatum‘s character to try and rekindle their lost romance.

It’s certainly not an entirely original premise, and I still have some doubts about Tatum‘s presence in these romantic dramas. (Can he please return to films like A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints?). But McAdams is a strong performer, and in my opinion, she even made The Time Traveler’s Wife somewhat watchable.

Her upcoming slate includes the promising Morning Glory, Midnight in Paris, and an untitled Terrence Malick project, so filming on The Vow is likely going to have to wait until late this year, or maybe even into early 2011. Either way, we probably won’t be seeing this film until 2012.

Do you have high hopes for The Vow?
