The 15 Most Exciting Summer Movies

15mostexcitingmoviesheader

By Jack Giroux

2008 was a great summer for the movies. Good entertainment was had, and not just dumb popcorn movies for once. We got The Dark Knight, Wall-E, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, and Pineapple Express. This summer is even going to be better. Although the start was a bit shaky with Wolverine, Star Trek kicks it off right this weekend. Here are the top 15 stand out films this summer:

15- Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen

Release Date- June 24th

transformers2superbowl

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen will inevitably offer no more then a lot of explosions and CGI, but with robots. While the first film wasn’t a landmark of any kind, and mostly dumb, it was fun none-the-less. The 147 minute running time for the new one is a bit bothersome, but long running times are fine when the story calls for it. My only question is do we really need to see robots fighting for that long? Its a Michael Bay movie, there will only be good action, nothing more. Even the length of the first movie was a problem, the last thirty minutes turned into nothing but repetitive action. Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen will without a doubt be a fun action movie, even if it extends its welcome.

The Most Over-the-Top Action Movies of the Decade

crank

by Jordan Raup

In honor of Crank: High Voltage hitting theaters this weekend here is a rundown of the Most Over-the-Top Action Movies of the Decade. Some of these are actually decent films that hold their own (Transporter, Kill Bill Vol. 1) and others are awful, but over-the-top worthy (Rambo, Punisher: War Zone). I will try and be as spoiler-free as possible when describing the scenes, and include YouTube clips if available. Check out the full list and below:

300 (Snyder, 2007)

300-1

Why It Is On This List: This visually astounding, but narratively overwrought film features more bloodthirsty half-naked men running around in slo-motion that anything else on the list.

Most Over-the-Top Scene: The decapitated head flying through the air is good but the scene below fulfilled my over-the-top action fix for the year:

[Looking Ahead] 2010 Oscar Predictions

Last Sunday Slumdog Millionaire swept the Academy Awards concluding the culmination of 2008 cinema. 2009 film is now upon us. It’s been a bit of a mix with the horrendous Paul Blart: Mall Cop kicking off the year, but so far, it’s left us with a couple gems (Taken and Coraline 3-D). It’s not too early to take a look at the films that we will be seeing in next year’s Academy Awards. If you are looking for a more mainstream/blockbuster films, check out my 50 Must-See Movies of 2009. If you want a list of higher caliber films, here are my predictions for the major 2010 Oscars categories:

Best Picture/Director

I’ve decided to lump these two categories together since it’s too early to separate them out. Here are 10 films that I can see being in the running with some other contenders after:

Martin Scorsese – Shutter Island (a.k.a. Ashecliffe

Plot: Drama is set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island. Leo DiCaprio leads an all-star cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams and Max von Sydow
