Word on the street (remember that said word could, in fact, be unsubstantiated and untrue) is that director Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, the first two Harry Potter films, I Love You, Beth Cooper) has been offered the chance to direct The Man of Steel, the next Superman film, written by David S. Goyer and produced by Christopher Nolan. [Pajiba]
Why, you ask? Because Warner Bros. thinks he’s “the right fit” and is planning “the 3D Superman reboot for December 2012. “[Supermanhomepage] Apparently Goyer wanted to direct but the studio recalled that he directed The Invisible and The Unborn, and said no. In all fairness, Columbus would fair better than Goyer most likely.
That said, is Columbus really the right fit? Is there no better option? It’s not as though Columbus is some cheap newcomer (a la Spielberg with Jaws) or a reliable semi-retiree (like, I don’t know, Richard Donner!). There has to be someone in the man’s price range who’s a bit more creative. A filmmaker as bland as the superhero is the kiss of death.
Could Columbus make Superman fly again?

McG (Terminator Salvation) will be bringing the Man of Steel back to the big screen, Deadline reports. A few years back McG was attached to direct along with a script by J.J. Abrams. David Goyer is currently working on a draft and Christopher Nolan is still creatively involved, but that won’t last long since he apparently has the upmost trust in McG and will let him be during production. Nolan believes after Terminator Salvation he has the chops to pull off a franchise starter, which he also did with the underrated and profitable Charlie’s Angles series. While the release date is still up in there, expect a 2012 or 2013 summer release. Here’s a few more tidbits: Read the full story

There has been rumors of Warner Bros trying to get Superman back on the big screen for quite some time now. Deadline is reporting that they have looked to none other than Christopher Nolan, who successfully revived the Batman franchise with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. He has a “godfather” role in the development process, making sure all the right decisions are made to bring back Superman. Not only that, he has “hatched an idea” the next Batman film and, as we reported yesterday, his brother Jonah Nolan and David Goyer are currently in the writing process. Read the full story
