Since busting on to the scene with Arrested Development in 2003, Michael Cera has worked with many of today’s most popular comedians, and you’d have to be living under a rock to not have seen at least one of his films. Some say he is risking overexposure. But I say Cera has been steadily working toward Kevin Bacon status, developing a film career worthy of his own 6 degrees game.
To be a truly effective Party Game Icon, Cera would have to link to a variety of film actors to allow for a range of players to participate:
a major Hollywood star (for casual movie fans)
an international film star (for film students)
an independent film star (for hipsters)
a film star from Hollywood’s golden age (for anyone over 25).
As you can see below – Cera’s plotted his course well:

This week saw the unconfirmed box office success Date Night, starring television superstars Tina Fey and Steve Carell, where the married couple decide to go out and have fun for just one night and end up getting caught in a crazy adventure. In honor of Shawn Levy’s latest film here are my Top Ten ‘One Crazy Night’ Films.
Funny People is Judd Apatow’s most profound and funniest work to date. Most films are inept of achieving this level of emotional and comedic grandeur. It strikes perfectly on every dramatic and comedic beat possible. Apatow has previously delivered two excellent films that were of course hilarious, but never contained this level of dramatic investment.
George is a highly successful comedian and movie star who has just learned that he has an untreatable blood disorder and doesn’t have much time left to live. Ira is an aspiring stand up comedian who works at a deli and has not yet found much success. George one night decides to return to do a night of standup where he first meets Ira. After Ira makes an impression on him, George hires him to be his joke writer and in some ways his friend. George soon starts to grasp his short comings in life and wants to reconcile. He wants to treat every day as if its his last and the main goal on his mind is to find the one who got away, his old sweetheart Laura. Soon after they encounter each other on good terms, George finds out that he is no longer sick. After discovering this he wants to make a new life for himself with Laura in it, who is also currently married.
Not sure what is coming out this month? Here is my rundown of my most anticipated films coming out:
10. Fast & Furious (Lin, April 3rd)
Plot: As he is released from prison, Brian O’Conner teams up with Dominic Toretto work with the feds to bring down a heroin importer by infiltrating his operation.
Why You Should See It: I’m actually not sure if this is a film to watch or avoid. The first one was enjoyable and it looks like a return to the original. I’ve heard early buzz that it is a decent popcorn flick.
If honesty is the best quality, Adventurelandis the gem of the cinematic year so far. Written and directed by Greg Mottola (the guy who directed Superbad) this dramedy is a throwback in every way – from the setting of the film (summer 1987) to the laid-back comic delivery. There’s barely anything that can be defined as a joke in this thing.
For the most part, all the movie’s laughs are natural and observatory rather than fed and forced. This is not to say that the latter doesn’t work – see I Love You, Man for proof of this, a film that feeds jokes consistently with a natural rhythm that does not overwhelm.
Here is the new trailer for the Harold Ramis (Caddyshack, Groundhog Day) comedy The Year One starring Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda) and Michael Cera (Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Superbad). Check it out below or in HD on YouTube:
Entertainment Weekly is reporting thatAmanda Seyfried(Mean Girls), Vanessa Hudgens(High School Musical), Abbie Cornish(Stop-Loss), Evan Rachel Wood(The Wrestler), and Emma Stone (Superbad) are in talks to star in Zack Snyder’s next film Sucker Punch.
The film is suppose to be kind of a twisted version of Alice in Wonderland in a mental institution, which sounds pretty awesome. I personally think this cast is awesome, not the best actresses, but they are girls I wouldn’t mind to see going crazy with machine guns. It is currently scheduled for October 8th, 2010.
Not sure what is coming out this month? Here is a run-down of my eleven most anticipated films:
11. The Great Buck Howard (March 20th) (limited)
Plot: A law school dropout (Colin Hanks), much to the chagrin of his father (Tom Hanks), becomes the new assistant to an illusionist in decline (Malkovich). Can the fledgling partnership lead to the comeback of a lifetime?
Miramax has debuted the Adventureland Red Band Trailer on IGN. The comedy is written and directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad) and stars Jessie Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Bill Hader, and Ryan Reynolds. Check it out below:
Plot: A comedy set in the summer of 1987 and centered around a recent college grad (Eisenberg) who takes a nowhere job at his local amusement park, only to find it’s the perfect course to get him prepared for the real world.
I loved Superbad and Adventureland is looking to be just as good. The film got pretty positive reviews at Sundance. It will also be at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March before hitting theaters in wide release on March 27, 2009.
What do you think of the red band trailer for Adventureland?
Variety reports Michel Gondry, director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind is in talks to direct The Green Hornet. Seth Rogen is starring, producing, and co-writing with Evan Goldberg (Pineapple Express, Superbad). Although Stephen Chow dropped out of the directing role he is still on to co-star as Kato.
Plot: By night, debonair newspaper publisher Britt Reid fights crime as a masked superhero known as The Green Hornet. At his side is martial arts expert Kato.
After rumors of The Green Hornet being scrapped at Sundance, then it coming back with Gondry attached I couldn’t be more excited. Altough Be Kind Rewind was the most disappointing film I saw last year I loved Science of Sleep and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a masterpiece in my eyes. Bring on June 25th, 2010.
What do you think of Gondry directing The Green Hornet?
