Firstshowing has reported that Empire via British comics artist Mark “Jock” Simpson’s Twitter announced Sunshine and 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland is working on a new update to Judge Dredd. Yes, a remake of the 1995 Danny Cannon directed film starring Sylvester Stallone. Garland is most closely associated with director Danny Boyle. Garland is working under his DNA Films company. Artist Mark Simpson has exclaimed “Working through script visuals for Judge Dredd movie. Alex Garland writes a great script.”
I have no doubt Garland will pull out a great script, as I loved (most) of his previous ones. It will be interesting to see him write for someone other than Boyle. I can only assume Boyle will not be attached to this project. I have never actually seen the original film, but I’ve heard it’s awesomely bad.
Do you like the original? What do you think about a remake written by Garland?
Adam is a simplistic story that succeeds thanks to two excellent lead performances. This isn’t particularly groundbreaking, but it contains enough enjoyable aspects to become a memorable entry in the romance genre. With the recent wave of crappy rom-coms, an actual good love story is more than welcomed.
The story revolves around a lonely man with Asperger’s Syndrome named Adam (Hugh Dancy). After the passing of his father, Adam becomes even more reclusive. But when a new neighbor moves in next store named Beth (Rose Byrne), Adam soon finds his first love. Beth at first is intrigued by Adam’s oddball persona and childlike wonder. Soon she finds out about Adam’s condition and she doesn’t mind. She’s fully enticed by Adam. Why shouldn’t she be? He’s a well hearted man that’s only well intention. Of course Adam feels the same way about Beth, who had the case of “love at first sight.” Beth may have to deal with the annoying opinion on the matter from her family, but her love for Adam renders their opinions useless.
Getting to interview Duncan Jones for his upcoming film Moon was quite a joy. Last month I posted a part of that interview where he gave details on what Ridley Scott thought of Moon, the Blu-Ray release, the release of Clint Mansell’s beautiful score, and he also talked about his possible next science fiction film Mute. Jones showed me some beautiful concept art that Gavin Rothery did for Mute and he also showed me a short video that he previewed to Terry Gilliam, you can find my write up on that footage on the part of that interview. Here’s what else he had to say about his truly excellent film. Moon opens up in New York and Los Angeles on June 12th. Again, I still cant stress enough how great of a film it is and it must be seen in theaters.
So what was the experience of showing the film at Sundance like?
Duncan Jones: It was an incredibly nerve racking experience, because we had shown the film to about thirty people who were all involved with the film so no one else had really seen it. Then all of the sudden our first screening is in-front of thirteen-hundred people. My dad was there, my family was there, the cast and crew who there. It was terrifying (laughing). Sony Classics had been sniffing around the film, but hadn’t made any decisions about distributing the film. They basically wanted to see what the Sundance reaction was going to be. So it felt like everything was relying on this one screening. It was terrifying.
Hollywood Reporter is saying Cillian Murphy (Sunshine, The Dark Knight), Ellen Page (Juno, Smart People), and Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose, Public Enemies) are joining Leonardo DiCaprio (Body of Lies, Revolutionary Road) in The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan’s 2010 summer sci-fi thriller, Inception.
DiCaprio’s character is mentioned as a CEO-type, while Cotillard would play his wife. Page is a young college grad student and DiCaprio’s sidekick. James Franco was also in talks to join the project but had to bow out due to a scheduling conflict with Your Highness. Nolan has kept the script strictly under wraps, only describing the film as a contemporary sci-fi action set within “the architecture of the mind”.
The latest sci-fi flick by director Alex Proyas is an impressive and surprisingly ambitious film. Proyas is the genius behind Dark City and The Crow, and yes he also did I, Robot, but it is easy to give him a pass for that mindless action spectacle since he didn’t have creative control. Where does Knowing stand compared to those movies? Its by no means on level of with Dark City andThe Crow, but it does manage to excel beyond I, Robot.
Overture Films has released the trailer for the creepy sci-fi thriller, Pandorum. The film stars Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, and Cam Gigandet. Check it out below:
Not sure what is coming out this month? Here is a run-down of my eleven most anticipated films:
11. The Great Buck Howard (March 20th) (limited)
Plot: A law school dropout (Colin Hanks), much to the chagrin of his father (Tom Hanks), becomes the new assistant to an illusionist in decline (Malkovich). Can the fledgling partnership lead to the comeback of a lifetime?
Variety reports Michel Gondry, director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind is in talks to direct The Green Hornet. Seth Rogen is starring, producing, and co-writing with Evan Goldberg (Pineapple Express, Superbad). Although Stephen Chow dropped out of the directing role he is still on to co-star as Kato.
Plot: By night, debonair newspaper publisher Britt Reid fights crime as a masked superhero known as The Green Hornet. At his side is martial arts expert Kato.
After rumors of The Green Hornet being scrapped at Sundance, then it coming back with Gondry attached I couldn’t be more excited. Altough Be Kind Rewind was the most disappointing film I saw last year I loved Science of Sleep and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a masterpiece in my eyes. Bring on June 25th, 2010.
What do you think of Gondry directing The Green Hornet?
UPDATE: The list below was written in January of 2009. I suggest checking out our new list, 65 Must See Movies of 2010. Click the image below to see:
So 2008 is over, come on, it’s time to move on. Here are 50 great reasons to go to the theater this year:
January
My Bloody Valentine 3-D (Jan 16th)
Synopsis: After surviving a fatal accident that claimed the lives of five of men in a mine shaft, Harry Warden performed a horrific killing spree on Valentines night in the town of Harmony, killing 22 people before he was shot to death.
Why You Should See It: Early screening reports have said there is more sex, limbs, and buckets of blood than one can handle. The 3-D gimmick is the only reason this is on my list. If implemented right it should be a great time at the movies.
