Weaver and Willis Join Summit’s ‘The Cold Light Of Day’

Action icons Sigourney Weaver and Bruce Willis are gearing up to face off but unfortunately not in an Aliens/Die Hard crossover film, rather an upcoming thriller for Summit Entertainment. The two stars will join Henry Cavill, who plays a man whose family is kidnapped abroad, in The Cold Light Of Day. Willis is set to play Cavill’s father and Weaver will purportedly play the villain in the kidnapping plot.  The film is being helmed by JCVD director Marbouk El Mechri. Read the full story

‘The Adjustment Bureau’ Delayed Until March 2011

/Film has reported several release date shifts from Universal, the most notable of which is certainly the continuing delay of George Nolfi‘s The Adjustment Bureau. The film’s trailer, which debuted online in mid-May, impressed me quite a bit, so the fact that the release date is now March 4th, 2011 (previously scheduled as September 17th, 2010) will no doubt bring negative buzz to the surface. The report identifies a series of steady rumors which are all saying the same thing: The movie just isn’t that good. Considering the Philip K. Dick source material, as well as the mutual appeal of lead performers Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, this is rather surprising to me. Did anyone else see this coming?

The other films mentioned in the report include Greg Mottola‘s science-fiction-comedy Paul, starring Seth Rogen, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jason Bateman, and Sigourney Weaver. There were some lofty hopes for a late 2010 release, but an official date has now been set for March 18th, 2011. I am curious to see how this film shapes out, as it is Mottola‘s follow-up to Adventureland, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite romantic tales in recent years.

The last group of films with release date changes include the following:

  • Devil (previously titled The Night Chronicles: Devil): September 17th, 2010
  • The Dark Fields: January 21st, 2011
  • Skyline: November 12th, 2010
  • Kids in America: December 3rd, 2010
  • Sanctum: February 4th, 2011

Which of these films are you anticipating the most?

Sigourney Weaver Joins Singleton’s ‘Abducted’

Sigourney Weaver Joins Singleton’s ‘Abducted’

In the 80′s, Sigourney Weaver was known as the “thinking man’s sex symbol” and the actress, now 60, seems intent on retaining that title with a slew of brainy roles in upcoming films.

As we reported last week, the Avatar star has signed on for a role as para-psychologist in Rodrigo CortésRed Lights and has now landed another psychologist role in the forthcoming Taylor Lautner-vehicle Abducted.

The film deals with a young man (Lautner) who is distressed to find a picture of himself as a baby on a missing persons website. The plot sounds somewhat reminiscent of the novel The Face On The Milk Carton. Weaver will play the psychologist he turns to to deal with this trauma.

John Singleton (Boyz In The Hood, Four Brothers) is set to direct this feature for Lionsgate. Singleton’s last film was the generally well-received modern Western action flick Four Brothers.

How will Singleton and Lautner work together? What do you think of Weaver as an actress?

Sigourney Weaver Cast as Queen of the ‘Vamps’

Sigourney Weaver Cast as Queen of the ‘Vamps’

Sci-fi legend Sigourney Weaver will now be playing a vampire in director Amy Heckerling‘s upcoming comedy Vamps. The film, which also stars Alicia Silverstone, will see Weaver as Ciccerus; a blood thirsty vampire queen responsible for turning Silverstone into a fanged fatale.

The film is expected to begin shooting next month. Weaver has been great in comedy before, especially in such star image-conscious fare like Galaxy Quest, and Heckerling’s last film, I Could Never Be Your Woman, shows she has a significant talent for bringing funny, interesting roles for middle aged women to the screen. Hopefully this pairing will produce great results.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s ‘Paul’ Delayed To 2011?

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s ‘Paul’ Delayed To 2011?

Comedian Simon Pegg recently announced via Twitter that his next film, Paul, will be delayed. The actor did not specify when the sci-fi comedy would be released just that more extensive CGI work is needed in the following statement.

Due to an extensive post production schedule you won’t be seeing our little desert caper any time soon. Rest assured it will be worth it.

Pegg also announced that Hot Fuzz composer, David Arnold, will be scoring the film. Paul sees Pegg reteaming with Nick Frost as two sci-fi nerds who stumble upon a friendly alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) in the New Mexico desert. The film uses a hybrid of live action and CGI which explains the extended post-production work. Also appearing in the film are Sigourney Weaver, Jane Lynch, Kristin Wiig and Bill Hader.

Are you excited for Paul or does this delay lower your expectations?

Weaver To Return For ‘Avatar’ Sequel?

Weaver To Return For ‘Avatar’ Sequel?

Sigourney Weaver announced on the French show Cinebuzz TV that she has spoken with Avatar director James Cameron about how her character could return for the sequel. The video is difficult to decipher as Weaver, who is fluent in French, conducts half of the interview in French and a French translator speaks over her when the actress is speaking in English. However, the actress suggests that her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, could return as a spirit inhabiting the sacred tree featured in the film. Weaver, in her human form, was one of the best parts about Avatar and I’m not sure how well she would work as a disembodied voice. Also, the unavoidable comparisons to Grandmother Willow won’t help shed the ‘Pocahontas in space’ criticisms. Read the full story

[Jordan's Review] Avatar

Avatar83

20th Century Fox | USA | 162 min

It’s an emotional experience to talk about something you have put so much and energy and anticipation into. Will it live up to the hype? Was all this effort justified? With Avatar, director James Cameron doesn’t give you a second to think about it. The walls of the theater, the red exit sign, the faint glow of the lights lining the stairs, and now the 3D glasses resting on your head all seemingly evaporate after one is ripped out of the seat into a world of wonder and adventure. This goal of complete escapism is familiar to Cameron as we went back in history with Titanic, explored the extraterrestrial with Aliens, and got a glimpse of futuristic war with The Terminator. As we venture into the extraordinary world of Pandora, Cameron’s goal is realized to the fullest, setting a new benchmark for the epic blockbuster. Read the full story
