The 6 Degrees of Michael Cera

Since busting on to the scene with Arrested Development in 2003, Michael Cera has worked with many of today’s most popular comedians, and you’d have to be living under a rock to not have seen at least one of his films. Some say he is risking overexposure. But I say Cera has been steadily working toward Kevin Bacon status, developing a film career worthy of his own 6 degrees game.

To be a truly effective Party Game Icon, Cera would have to link to a variety of film actors to allow for a range of players to participate:

  • a major Hollywood star (for casual movie fans)
  • an international film star (for film students)
  • an independent film star (for hipsters)
  • a film star from Hollywood’s golden age (for anyone over 25).

As you can see below – Cera’s plotted his course well:

Do you believe Michael Cera has reached Kevin Bacon status? Give us your examples in the comments below.

Shia LaBeouf Discusses Indiana Jones 5

Shia LaBeouf Discusses Indiana Jones 5

As one of the people who personally held nothing against Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, I still don’t think that a fifth Indiana Jones movie is a good idea. For one thing, many people didn’t like the last film, and if this is like that, then audiences will just be turned off even further. And, if there is a fifth film, this means that Steven Spielberg will focus his attention on it when, frankly, there are other projects he should work on. Basically, we don’t need a fifth Indiana Jones.

You don’t want one? Too bad! According to Shia LaBeouf, George Lucas, everybody’s favorite storyteller,  has come up with a “crazy idea” (you’re supposed to say that in your head like “craaaaaaaazy idea”) for the newest installment. The quote comes to us from ShowBizSpy (via CinemaBlend) and is as follows:

They’re script writing right now, I got called into Steven’s office and he pitched a little bit to me and it sounds crazy; it sounds really cool.

What’s even more important is that in the same article Shia admits that he’s not “a huge spender.” This is good to know, as it was something that I had been contemplating for the past few months. Oh, and regarding that quote about Indy 5, I don’t believe it. If you look at the article, there’s no mention of where this comes from or when it was said, so I don’t think there’s any truth to it. Therefore, I don’t think it warrants any real discussion, other than saying that if this movie does get made, it will both make a lot of money and incur the wrath of the people who are responsible for the movie making money. The wonderful cycle of fanboys.

Hillcoat and LaBeouf To Team Up On ‘Triple Nine’?

Hillcoat and LaBeouf To Team Up On ‘Triple Nine’?

A recent /Film report suggests that director John Hillcoat and star Shia LaBeouf could be teaming up sometime in the near future. The project? Triple Nine, a crime drama written by Matt Cooke, and to be produced by Steve Golin (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Babel). The story, which I must admit is rather intriguing, goes something like this:

A group of crooked cops planning a major heist realize they must shoot one of their own in order to get away with it. The lead character is an upstanding young officer who they choose as their victim.

Warner Bros. is showing the most interest in the project at this point. It is also worth noting that Chris Pine (Star Trek) is eying a role in the film.

Hillcoat last worked on The Road, an overlooked 2009 film that I was very impressed with. He also has The Proposition, an acclaimed western, under his belt. LaBeouf‘s last film was the mega blockbuster Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and currently he is scheduled to appear in only one other film prior to the third Transformers effort: Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which opens on September 24.

[Rumor Mill] Tony Scott To Take ‘Associate’ Position

[Rumor Mill] Tony Scott To Take ‘Associate’ Position

This potential news feels at once appropriate and not so much. Tony Scott is purportedly considering taking the director’s chair on The Associate, an adaptation of the John Grisham novel of the same name, about a young lawyer thrust into a high-profile law firm under the blackmailing guise of a corrupt defense contractor looking for secrets. [First Showing] Screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) and movie star Shia LaBeouf have both been on board pretty much since the novel was released on book shelves.

Scott is a (semi) reliable action director, but he’s never done corporate espionage (Enemy of the State comes somewhat close, I guess) and, to be honest, it seems to “easy” for the man. Which is to say it doesn’t seem overbearingly-convoluted enough. But then Scott has made a late career out of convoluted, taking films that once were simple kidnapping tales (Man On Fire) and turning them into rampaging, green-tinted, jump-cutted morality tales. Or a biopic (Domino) into a half flicker film/half satire, or a movie about a time traveling cop (Deja Vu) into, well, okay that one was always crazy.

Let us remember the two most successful Grisham adaptations (The Rainmaker and Runaway Jury) were directed by a money-grubbing Francis Ford Coppola and studio friend Gary Fleder, respectively. The courtroom rarely abides visual creativity.

Provided Scott takes the job, will his style work for corporate intrigue?

Brad Pitt & Shia LaBeouf Offered Parts in Whodunnit ‘Riptide’

Brad Pitt & Shia LaBeouf Offered Parts in Whodunnit ‘Riptide’

Screenwriter Peter Morgan has enjoyed some great success over the past few years, earning Oscar nominations for The Queen and Frost/Nixon, as well as penning critically-acclaimed efforts such as The Last King of Scotland and The Damned United. He also wrote the script for Clint Eastwood‘s thriller Hereafter, which will be released in October of this year.

With all of those notable films under his belt, I am eager to hear about any project that has his name on it, and Pajiba is reporting that he was recently asked to perform an extensive re-write on a “whodunnit” titled Riptide, originally scribed by British writer Richard McBrien. Steve Tisch (Forrest Gump) and William Davies (How to Train Your Dragon) have signed on to produce.

Furthering the report is the recent development that Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf have been offered roles in the film. The report suggested that Pitt was offered the role of the investigator, while LaBeouf would play the young broker.  The brief synopsis reads as follows:

Riptide [is] a “whodunnit” set on board a ship called the Nautica. It’s about a handyman, a young stock broker, and the stock broker’s girlfriend. One of the men is found dead floating in the sea. The girlfriend is found at a nearby hotel. An investigator is called in to figure out what happened and why.

It sound simple enough, but I think we can bet that Morgan will be able to put his own original twist on things. I also have to think that Pitt and LaBeouf would be more-than-interested in working with a writer of such esteemed caliber. It should be interesting to see how the project develops.

What do you think of Morgan writing a whodunnit?

Shia LaBeouf To Die A ‘Countryman’

Mandate Pictures is employing Mr. LaBeouf to play the lead in The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, from an original screenplay (wow, that’s different and refreshing) by Matt Drake. Dante Ariola will direct, who doesn’t have much accredited to him feature-wise. The man’s a commercial director. So was Tony Scott, Michael Bay, Duncan Jones, etc. Interesting.

More information, including the plot:

‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ International Trailer

A new international trailer for Oliver Stone‘s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps starring Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Brolin, Frank Langella, Carey Mulligan, Susan Sarandon, Vanessa Ferlito and Charlie Sheen has been released at Sun TV. You can view the new trailer here.

Plot: Emerging from a lengthy prison stint, Gordon Gekko finds himself on the outside of a world he once dominated. Looking to repair his damaged relationship with his daughter, Gekko forms an alliance with her fiancé Jacob (Shia LaBeouf), and Jacob begins to see him as a father figure. But Jacob learns the hard way that Gekko – still a master manipulator and player – is after something very different from redemption.

The new trailer gives much more of the plot of the film. We see more of LaBeouf’s relationship with Gekko’s daughter which the original trailer did not give us. This trailer does get me more excited for this film. I was a huge fan of the original film and I can’t wait to see what Stone has planned for the film.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps hits theaters April 23rd.

What do you think of the new trailer?
