‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ International Trailer

A new international trailer for Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps starring Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Brolin, Frank Langella, Carey Mulligan, Susan Sarandon, Vanessa Ferlito and Charlie Sheen has been released at Sun TV. You can view the new trailer here.

Plot: Emerging from a lengthy prison stint, Gordon Gekko finds himself on the outside of a world he once dominated. Looking to repair his damaged relationship with his daughter, Gekko forms an alliance with her fiancé Jacob (Shia LaBeouf), and Jacob begins to see him as a father figure. But Jacob learns the hard way that Gekko – still a master manipulator and player – is after something very different from redemption.

The new trailer gives much more of the plot of the film. We see more of LaBeouf’s relationship with Gekko’s daughter which the original trailer did not give us. This trailer does get me more excited for this film. I was a huge fan of the original film and I can’t wait to see what Stone has planned for the film.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps hits theaters April 23rd.

John Hillcoat’s ‘The Promised Land’ Is No More

Just before the release of John Hillcoat’s film The Road in early October 2009, rumors began to fly of the possible story and cast of his next project. The script which was to be titled The Promised Land is an adaptation of Matt Bondurant’s novel The Wettest County in the World. The film was scripted by Nick Cave and set to possibly star Shia LaBeouf, Ryan Gosling, and Amy Adams. In a recent interview published in the UK, Hillcoat states that the film is dead thanks to the “apocalypse” of the film industry. From a diary printed in the UK paper “The Telegraph” he writes: Read the full story

Hillcoat’s Next Project ‘The Promised Land’?

thepromisedland

Based on a promo poster on display in the American Film Market, declaring that Nick Cave was writing, John Hillcoat was directing, and Shia LaBeouf, Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams are starring in a film adaptation of the Matt Bondurant novel The Wettest County in the World, entitled The Promised Land [First Showing].

the-promised-land

However, it has been noted on the poster the small print “credits not contractual” (courtesy of Slash Film), so the gray area continues with only the black-and-white textual promise of a potentially great film. Here is a summary of the book, courtesy of Simon and Schuster:

Based on the true story of Matt Bondurant’s grandfather and two granduncles, The Wettest County in the World is a gripping tale of brotherhood, greed, and murder. The Bondurant Boys were a notorious gang of roughnecks and moonshiners who ran liquor through Franklin County, Virginia, during Prohibition and in the years after. Forrest, the eldest brother, is fierce, mythically indestructible, and the consummate businessman; Howard, the middle brother, is an ox of a man besieged by the horrors he witnessed in the Great War; and Jack, the youngest, has a taste for luxury and a dream to get out of Franklin. Driven and haunted, these men forge a business, fall in love, and struggle to stay afloat as they watch their family die, their father’s business fail, and the world they know crumble beneath the Depression and drought.

It reads like a much darker version of Legends of the Fall with a lot of whiskey, so I’m in. Especially is these credits become contractual. Stay tuned and cross fingers.

More Casting News for ‘Wall Street 2′

image

The New York Times ( via The Playlist) had an interview with Oliver Stone in which he discussed his sequel Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, set to start filming this week in New York City.  Stone revealed two casting tidbits that were previously unknown at the time.  The first is that Josh Brolin will be in the film as the main villain, described as the head of an investment bank in the Times article, but The Playlist describes him as the “hedge fund antagonist” for the picture.  The other piece of casting news was somewhat expected but never confirmed, that Charlie Sheen will reprise his role in the sequel as his character Bud Fox from the original in a cameo.  At the end of the first film his character helped get Michael Douglas’ Gordon Gekko be put in jail by wearing a wire, and who at the end was seen entering the courthouse for his own sentencing, one would assume that this film will clear up what happened at the end of the first, and how his cameo ties into Gekko being in the film, who according to Stone has been released from prison.

Also starring Shia LaBeouf in the lead as Jake Moore, a young man who is the fiancé of Gekko’s daughter and who is getting into the world of finance himself, its expected the movie will deal with Gekko trying to influence him in this corporate world, and how he may corrupt him.  The movie also features Susan Sarandon as Moore’s mother, Frank Langella as his mentor, and Carey Mulligan as his fiancé, and Gekko’s daughter.  The movie was written by Allen Loeb, and the will be released next year by 20th Century Fox, who distributed the original film in 1987.

I recently watched Wall Street for the first time this weekend, and I thought that the movie was fairly mediocre and felt like it wouldn’t be of much interest to those who have no knowledge of Wall Street, like myself.  I am however curious to see how a sequel would play out, especially with today’s financial crisis and the themes that the film could cultivate from that.  I think Josh Brolin is a terrific actor and I would see him in anything, and casting Charlie Sheen, even for just a cameo, could be a good way to tie the two films together, even with the already cast Michael Douglas reprising his role.  Whether Stone can make a film better than the original however remains to be seen, but in my eyes I don’t feel like it would be that difficult of a task.

Susan Sarandon Joins ‘Wall Street 2′

susan-sarandon

Variety (via CHUD) has revealed that actress Susan Sarandon has joined the cast of Oliver Stone’s Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, the sequel to Stone’s 1987 Wall Street.  She will play the mother of Shia LaBeouf’s character, who “falls under the influence of Gordon Gekko” (Michael Douglas), whom in the original mentored Charlie Sheen’s character.  The film was also will star Frank Langella, and is supposed to start filming next month in New York.

Described by IMDb as “As the global economy teeters on the brink of disaster, a young Wall Street trader partners with disgraced former Wall Street corporate raider Gordon Gekko on a two-tiered mission: To alert the financial community to the coming doom, and to find out who was responsible for the death of the young trader’s mentor.”, Wall Street 2 will be Stone’s first ever sequel.  The movie was written by Allan Loeb based on a story by Bryan Burrough, who wrote the book which was made into the Michael Mann film Public Enemies.  It’s scheduled for release on April 23, 2010.

I have very mixed feelings about this movie.  For some reason, a sequel to Wall Street doesn’t sound like the worst idea, but at the same time I think it’s somewhat unnecessary.  The movie is over 20 years old, but it apparently deals with the worldwide financial crisis, and that could be an interesting parallel to the original movie’s line of “greed is good”, and maybe the movie will become a good reflection of today.  Also, the cast has a good lineup to it, and this adds an air of credibility to it.  I think as a filmmaker Stone has faltered in recent years, but a return to his roots could be a good way to reignite his creativity.  Let’s hope this turns out to be true.

Frank Langella To Join Wall Street 2

wallstreet2langella

Variety is reporting that Frank Langella is in talks to play the role of Lewis Zabel in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. Langella joins the already star-packed cast of Shia LaBeouf and Michael Douglas. Langella’s character is a “old-time broker who mentors LaBeouf’s character, a young Wall Street broker names Jacob.” The plot of the film is “Gekko, having spent 14-years in prison for insider trading and security fraud, now making the lecture circuit as a published financial author. He mentors Jacob in hopes to reconnect with his daughter Winnie, Jacob’s wife.” Carey Mulligan is in talks to play Winnie and Josh Brolin is in negotiations for a role in the film as well. Production is set to start next month and a release is planned for the first quarter of 2010.

I got a chance to watch the original Wall Street last month for the first time and thought it was phenomenal. It is too bad that Charlie Sheen is not returning but having Gekko back is more than I could ask for. The film does seem like it is being rushed and I really hope that doesn’t hurt it in the end. Oliver Stone is a great director when it comes to films like Wall Street. Bringing politics, business, and greed into a Stone film is always a good time.

Are you looking forward to Wall Street 2?

[Jack's Review] Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen

TransformersREVIEW

By Jack Giroux

Editor’s Note: This review does contain spoilers.

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen is an underwhelming follow up to a highly entertaining blockbuster. This sequel does contain “explosive action”, but it comes too scarce and is almost incomprehensible. It is incredibly dumb, bloated, and runs far too long for an action film with no brain. This is, without a doubt, one of the biggest disappointments of the summer.

After fighting in a war Sam Witwicky is trying his best to live a normal life while going off to college. After discovering the last remaining piece of the all spark he starts seeing symbols leading to the truth about the Transformers ancient origins. Sam is taken away from his failed attempt at a normal when it becomes known that the fallen Decepticons are soon ready to rage war. They soon attempt on taking him prisoner to bring total destruction upon earth. With the help of Optimus Prime and the other Autobots, Sam must once again fight his way to saving mankind.
