Tarantino To Reveal The True Harvey Weinstein?

Is the bad boy of cinema, Quentin Tarantino, planning a documentary about the bad boy of movie moguls, Miramax founder Harvey Weinstein?

According to a profile on filmmaker Barry Avrich’s own attempts to document Weinstein in the NY Times, Tarantino is reportedly considering a project that would chronicle Weinstein’s professional life from his work as a “concert promoter in Buffalo, through the heyday of Miramax, which released hits like Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love, and beyond.”

Apparently, Avrich had been working on a no holds barred expose about the notoriously foul mouthed Miramax maniac, but was denied access to certain avenues of information due to a conflict of interest with Tarantino‘s documentary. Now whether or not this is just a defense mechanism by Weinstein to prevent another filmmaker from uncovering dirty secrets that wish to remain buried is not clear, but either way, a Tarantino fueled documentary about the man who made him a legend would be a fascinating personal look at one of Hollywood’s most enigmatic and controversial media moguls.

Top Ten Ensemble Films

Top Ten Ensemble Films

With this week’s release of Valentine’s Day, I’ve decided to share what I think are some of the best ‘ensemble’ films I’ve ever seen.

What is an ‘ensemble’ film?  You may have heard of an ensemble cast, which is a film with a ton of minor characters all in a huge film (think 2012 or The Towering Inferno). I believe an ‘ensemble’ film to be a movie which decides to take all of these characters and make the film about a number of stories rather than one massive story as we are used to seeing every week in the cinema. Sometimes these stories can find a way of coming together and sometimes these ‘stories’ are just digging into different characters to give us a sense of perspective. Read the full story

Top Ten Travolta Characters

With the release of Pierre Morel‘s From Paris With Love starring John Travolta, I thought it would be somewhat therapeutic to go through my Top Ten Travolta Characters. Let it be known that this is not an assessment of the films but rather the characters Travolta played in the films and my love for them. Read the full story

[Review] Inglorious Basterds

1IBASTERDS

WARNING: The following review contains SPOILERS.

Inglorious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino’s new epic World War II film, will be looked upon as another tremendous gem in his filmography. This is a film stock-full of all of Tarantino’s signatures, from the twisted sense of humor to a great soundtrack.

Basterds is a terrific film that contains an excellent ensemble cast, a fantastic script and a visual style of its own. This may not be the masterpiece that Tarantino was hoping for (judging by the last line of the film), but it will still be looked on as a “glorious” piece of work.

Tarantino Not Finished With ‘Inglourious Basterds’

inglourious-basterds-new-image9

After the films premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this past week (our review here), word has reached that Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds may still not be fully completed.  According to First Showing, Tarantino himself has not yet crafted his final cut of the movie.  Word first reached that the film would run for roughly 160 minutes, but when the film premiered this past week, it’s official running time was 148 minutes.

There are conflicting reports about what these changes entail.  First Showing seems to think that the film will actually be edited down into a shorter form.  On the other hand, it seems that Screen Rant thinks that the film most of us will be seeing in August is the full, two-hour-and-forty minute cut that most assumed would play at Cannes.  Whether the film is extended or cut-down, both of them are saying that at least one scene will be edited back into the picture.

Top 25 Best Picture Nominees That Didn’t Win

I’m willing to bet money you can’t find a person that agrees with all the Best Picture wins in the last 10 years, even 5 years. Everyone has favorite films each year that don’t win, let alone get recognized (see Children of Men, The Third Man, Vertigo). Then there are films fortunate enough to get nominated but couldn’t secure a win. These are not snubs in all cases, sometimes the winners are well deserved (see The Godfather Part II, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and No Country For Old Men). Here are the Top 25 Best Picture Nominees That Didn’t Win:

25. There Will Be Blood (2007) (nominated) - No Country For Old Men (winner)

Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of an Upton Sinclair novel about a greedy oil prospector does more than just retell the story. It paints a sprawling, vivid image with much credit going to Daniel Day-Lewis and his flawless performance.

25 Great Films That Are Not Considered Great

By Dan Mecca

This list intends to pay homage to recent classics that have not been given the appropriate respect. In no particular order:

1. Lord of War (2005)  - dir. Andrew Niccol

Nicolas Cage as a smooth-talking gunrunner. The opening credits alone are haunting.
