[Off Stage] Mysterious Skin

MysteriousSkin

Desperate Pictures | US | 99 mins

Mysterious Skin is a film that will leave viewers in a state of disgust and confusion. While it is shocking and disturbing, which is probably an understatement, peeling back the layers of shock that saturate every frame will reveal one of the most poignant and brutally honest accounts of the lifelong effects of sexual abuse on children.  A film so raw and intense that you’ll begin to feel uneasy and think of yourself more a voyeur on someone’s insanely twisted life than tucked safely in your average home with your seemingly uneventful life. Reality will blur to the point you won’t be able to tell if you’re incredibly disgusted or incredibly interested and you will just be still — still to the raw story telling of Gregg Araki and locked into the haunting performance of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Chris Nolan’s Inception Teaser

Inception

Having recently found out that Martin Scorcese’s Shutter Island, starring Leo DiCaprio, will not come out until February, this beautifully elusive little teaser for the next Chris Nolan film starring Leo (courtesy of Trailer Addict) makes the leading man seem that much more attainable.

Apparently 2010 will be a good year for movies. At least those with DiCaprio in them.

What do you think of this trailer? Enough to make you want more?

[Merrill's Review] G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

gi-joe-rise-of-cobra-trailer-hd

It’s no surprise after the box office success of the Transformers series that Hasbro would be itching to bring it’s other big toy line to the big screen. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has arrived. While it isn’t great it does have the element of surprise and fun that the first Transformers film was successful at. This is the first time we get to see these toys on the big screen and Sommers packs enough action in that we are able to have a fun time with the film.

Stephen Sommers, who hasn’t made anything worthwhile since The Mummy, brings his stylistic campiness to the film and it works in his favor. The story revolves around key Joe characters Duke (Channing Tatum) and his partner Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) protecting a very dangerous weapon created by an evil mastermind and it just screams campiness. It is easy to deal with though because partnered with the campiness we get a few well-done action sequences.

Even during the moments when the film goes into unnecessary back story for some of the characters it is still a bit of a rush. Unfortunately, you can spot every plot twist coming a mile away – understandable but still unacceptable. It is nice that the trailer didn’t give away as much as I thought it did though. The story is about as deep as you would expect from a G.I. Joe movie and Sommers.

[Review] G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra movie image (5)

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is the standard formula summer action movie. It is mindless, cheesy, and yet still remains fun. While most expected a disaster, this is far from it. This is a film that does replace character development with nonstop action, but it still works. It is filled with a few impressive action sequences and also a few notable characters. While this won’t go down as a highlight of the summer, it is far from being the worst movie of the summer.

The story revolves around soldiers Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) who must guard a case that contains nanomites, a very dangerous weapon that was developed by an evil weapons manufacturing company named M.A.R.S. Dealer. James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) is the head of this organization and he has plans to sabotage this mission so the weapons would appear to be stolen. Leading this attack is the Baronness (Sienna Miller), who is also Duke’s former girlfriend. After the attack Duke and Ripcord are saved by a secret military team thats run by General Hawk (Dennis Quaid). After this rescue Hawk enlists them to be apart of team G.I. Joe which includes Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), Snake Eyes (Ray Park), Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Breaker (Saïd Taghmaoui). Once all of them team up they must stop Destro before he causes destruction all across the world!

First Look at the Deformed Cobra Commander

Gi Joe

Spoiler Warning- There hasn’t been a whole lot of photos or footage that show the Cobra Commander in the upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. There has been a few glimpses of what he may look like (the toy) and a quick snap shot taken from a foreign trailer. Now another image of the Cobra Commander has appeared online and it shows, what must be, his deformed psychical appearance in the third act. This image comes from a VFX webisode from director Stephen Sommers website. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra opens on August 7th.

[Review] ‘500 Days of Summer’

500daysofsummer

500 Days of Summer is a wildly likable film that actually delivers on some originality. Marc Webb, in his impressive directorial debut shows us an admirable story about love. Many have thrown around the term “classic” and while that is an overstatement, this surely will become a gem of its genre.

Tom is a hopeless romantic that believes in love at first sight and destiny. Tom grew up with fairy tale perceptions of love due to pop culture influence and The Graduate. After falling in love with his bosses’ assistant Summer, he soon starts to question the idea of love. Summer doesn’t share the same idea of love that Tom has, she’s more free spirited and doesn’t believe in fait. The film covers the first time they met, when they break up, and Tom’s transition after the break up. It’s told purely from his perspective.

[Interview] Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel of ‘500 Days of Summer’

500dos

A few weeks back I was lucky enough to participate in a webcam (which is apparent by the scattered structure) interview with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel for their upcoming film 500 Days of Summer. The films debuted at the Sundance film festival this year and was met with stellar reviews, 500 Days Of Summer opens on July 17th.

Tell us what it was like to work on independent films such as this.

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT: Uh-huh.

ZOOEY DESCHANEL: I mean, I would say it was like probably 60% improvised…

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT: Yeah.

ZOOEY DESCHANEL: …would you say?

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was a really good script so–

ZOOEY DESCHANEL: It was a great script, great script.

The 15 Most Exciting Summer Movies

15mostexcitingmoviesheader

By Jack Giroux

2008 was a great summer for the movies. Good entertainment was had, and not just dumb popcorn movies for once. We got The Dark Knight, Wall-E, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, and Pineapple Express. This summer is even going to be better. Although the start was a bit shaky with Wolverine, Star Trek kicks it off right this weekend. Here are the top 15 stand out films this summer:

15- Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen

Release Date- June 24th

transformers2superbowl

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen will inevitably offer no more then a lot of explosions and CGI, but with robots. While the first film wasn’t a landmark of any kind, and mostly dumb, it was fun none-the-less. The 147 minute running time for the new one is a bit bothersome, but long running times are fine when the story calls for it. My only question is do we really need to see robots fighting for that long? Its a Michael Bay movie, there will only be good action, nothing more. Even the length of the first movie was a problem, the last thirty minutes turned into nothing but repetitive action. Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen will without a doubt be a fun action movie, even if it extends its welcome.
