After experiencing an ultra-successful 2009 — not to mention the Oscar possibilities that still lie ahead — it’s safe to say that pretty much everyone has their eye on Jason Reitman. Well, according to this article from /Film, the man behind Up in the Air has lined up his next project. After some speculation that Jay and Mark Duplass were working on a script for Reitman to direct, it turns out that the brothers instead will direct the film themselves, with Reitman on board to produce. The Toronto International Film Festival has officially kicked off. Over the next 10 days I will try and report on as many films as possible. For each film I’ll try and give a mini-review of sorts. Since I’m seeing 5+ films a day it’s a little tricky getting all the writing done, but I’m tying my hardest. Here we go.
An Education (Lone Scherfig, UK)

“Where are you from, and where can we see you again?” During the post screening Q and A this question was asked to the lead Carey Mulligan. After seeing this film one will understand the need for this answer. Mulligan, from London, had her first role in Pride and Prejudice. It has taken five and half years of acting experience to get her “breakout” role. And what a breakout it is. Every second Mulligan is on screen she exudes a feeling that most actresses train their whole life to achieve. With the help of brilliant performances by Peter Sarsgaard and Alfred Molina the characters are front and center in this drama. The story follows a young school girl (Mulligan) struggling with her parent’s wishes to go to Oxford. She begins a relationship with a mysterious older man (Sarsgaard) and as we get glimpses into his upper class life questions arise. Director Scherfig also commands the camera with grace. As we transition from her quaint home life to the wild adventures with Sarsgaard’s character everything is handled with beauty and precision. The film doesn’t quite pack the dramatic punch I expected, but definitely one to keep a close eye on.

Not sure what is coming out this month? Here is a rundown of what to see, avoid, and rent this September.
11. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Lord, Miller, Sept. 18th)

Synopsis: Inspired by the children’s book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain.
Trailer
Why You Should See It: The fact that this Sony animation is brought to you by the guys behind How I Met Your Mother should be a good reason to see it. Sony’s last outing, Surf’s Up, was fun and the 3D aspect should make this family film one to see in the theater.
10. Surrogates (Mostow, Sept. 25th)

Synopsis: Set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots, a cop (Willis) is forced to leave his home for the first time in years in order to investigate the murders of others’ surrogates
Trailer
Why You Should See It: Sure the story has been told before and it probably won’t offer anything new to the sci-fi genre, but neither did The Fifth Element. Both have the same movie star, who has only gotten better with age.
9. The Burning Plain (Arriaga, Sept. 18th)

Synopsis: A drama with a two-tiered storyline concerning a mother (Basinger) and daughter (Theron) who try to form a bond after the young woman’s difficult childhood.
Trailer
Why You Should See It: Directed and scripted by the writer behind Iñárritu’s films (Amores Perros, Babel, 21 Grams) should be more than enough reason to see this drama.

This actually looks surprisingly good. Not enough horror comedies are released now a days, except for the great Drag Me to Hell which was criminally overlooked by general audiences. Its got everything the horror geek inside of me wants i.e lots of over-the-top blood, a funny story, and cheesy one liners. Another aspect that I am so impressed by is that Megan Fox actually looks good here. Maybe she was right that she could be a good actress if she was given the right material, which she wont get from the Transformers films. She looks funny, scary, and even kind of intimidating. Hopefully the end product lives up to this fun trailer.
Are you still excited for Jennifer’s Body? What do you think of this trailer?
