Look, I’ll defend Jack Black to the grave; the guy makes me crack up (High Fidelity, School of Rock), rocks my socks (Tenacious D) and even manages to show surprising dramatic chops (King Kong, Margot at the Wedding) but this new trailer for Rob Letterman‘s Gulliver’s Travels…yeesh. Check it out below via Apple. Read the full story
We have a new poster for the upcoming film, Gulliver’s Travels. Directed by Rob Letterman, who was responsible for the enjoyable Monsters vs. Aliens, Jack Black will play the title role, the film based on the classic satirical novel by Jonathan Swift.
Joining Black are Jason Segel, Emily Blunt and Billy Connolly. The film is scheduled for a December release, and like with most big studio films coming out these days, it will be shown in 3-D.
Stephen Chow, prolific comedic martial arts actor and director, is rumored to be starting production on a loose remake of Bruce Lee’s comedic action flick The Way of the Dragon. Under the title Tai Chi, Chow intends to bring his unique form of kung-fu action and humor to mainstream American audiences. He’s also bringing some star power to help him do it, in the form of Jack Black and Anne Hathaway along with an oversized American budget of $60 million. Read the full story
Only days after his co-host gig with Alec Baldwin at the Academy Awards, comedian/writer/actor Steve Martin will replace Dustin Hoffman in The Big Year, a comedy revolving around a competitive bird-watching competition tournament and three men out to win. The three men will be played by Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson.
Year Oneis a hit-or-miss comedy that almost skids by due to distinct character work and the satirical tone. Director Harold Ramis once delivered a string of comedy classics, from Caddyshack to Vacation to Groundhog Day. Unfortunately, this does not live up to that standard by any means.
The film follows two best friends named Zed and Oh, played by Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda) and Michael Cera (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) respectively, who are both outcasts in their tribe. Zed is the clumsy hunter who wants to do more with his life while Oh is a gatherer who is fine with his path, only wishing he could be with the girl he loves. After being banished from their tribe, the two head off on a new adventure that takes them to places they have never imagined. On their journey they discover new inventions and odd characters that help them a long their trip. After a series of mishaps, including becoming slaves, they must battle to protect the woman they desire in the middle of distressful situations.
You are entering the Back Stage. The following is a round-up of smaller film news around the web this week. These stories aren’t quite big enough to garner a full post, but worthy checking out.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt Cast in Christopher Nolan’s Inception [THR]
We reported the upcoming Harold Ramis (Ghostbusters, Caddyshack) comedy, Year One, was having some trouble with the MPAA getting down to a PG-13 rating. It looks like that has been resolved as THR reports the film has been re-cut and given a PG-13 rating for “for crude and sexual content throughout, brief strong language and comic violence.” The film, starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, will hit theaters June 19th, 2009.
THR is reporting that the second ratings appeal for the Judd Apatow produced, Harold Ramis comedy Year Onehas failed. The film, starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, has been given an R rating for “sexual content and language”. They still have an option for resubmitting a further edited version, but for now Sony will have to accept the rating. The $75 million comedy is set to be released June 19th, 2009.
I had no idea this film was even close to being R-rated. The early trailers seem pretty clean. I figure they will edit this down to make more money, but I wouldn’t mind either way what the rating is.

We brought you an extended clip yesterday, but here is a completely different Super Bowl Spot for the Harold Ramis comedy Year One starring Jack Black, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd, and David Cross. Check it out below from Firstshowing or in HD on Youtube:
Plot: When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Black and Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.
I liked both the clip and this TV spot. I definitely think this will be one of the better comedies of the year and I’m looking forward to it quite a bit.
