[Review] Earth

earth-images-20090403005540342_640w

By Jordan Raup

We’ve come a long way since Nanook of the North, the first full-length feature documentary. Flaherty’s 1922 look at Inuk life was a revolutionary staple in cinema, pushing romanticism to the its fullest potential at that time. Almost 90 years later we have Earth, one of the most beautiful cinematic achievements I have witnessed and also the most expensive documentary film ever made with a $47 million budget. The film is based off the popular BBC/Discovery series, Planet Earth. It uses many of the same spectacular scenes from the show, condensed for film.

Dan Brown Writes New Book, Movie Gets Made

dan_brown

With the hype machine rolling at an all-time high for Ron Howard’s Angels & Demons, news has begun to sprout on the third film in this “Da Vinci Trilogy”.

According to CHUD , Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, will release his long delayed follow up to the previous books mentioned, formerly known as The Solomon Key, now known as The Lost Symbol.  With the financial, if not critical success of The Da Vinci Code, and the likely success of Angels & Demons, the film has naturally been greenlit, while it’s possible nobody but Brown has actually seen a copy of the book.  It is expected that both star Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard will be returning for the film. The book is released September 15th, 2009.

‘The Half-Blood Prince’ Moves Up 2 Days

harrypotterandthehalf-bloodprince

After getting delayed eight months, I guess every hour helps. Warner Bros has announced that we will now be able to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on Wednesday, July 15th 2009, instead of of July 17th. This means there will likely be some Tuesday midnight screenings. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Christopher Nolan Delays 3rd Batman for Sci-Fi Adventure

nolan

The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan has decided to take on Inception. The film, described by THR as “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind” is an original screenplay written by Nolan. Warner Bros is producing, which means they want to make Nolan happy. I would too if he made one of the highest grosses films of all time. The plan is to begin shooting this summer and Warner Bros hopes to release in Summer 2010.

Nolan made The Prestige between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight so I don’t see the problem with this, seeing how brilliant that film turned out. No other details have been revealed about Inception, but we will definitely be keeping an eye on it.

Do you want Nolan to continue with the Batman franchise or are you looking forward to this departure?

Bruno Takes Over 2012

Variety reports Sacha Bara Cohen’s new film, Bruno will be moving from May 15th to July 10th, the date in which Roland Emmerich’s 2012 was recently moved from. The Universal film will now go up against the Chris Columbus comedy, I Love You, Beth Cooper. Sacha Bara Cohen’s new film follows flamboyant Austrian fashionista Brüno as he takes his show to America. I’m hoping the comedic magic of Borat will continue. We will have to wait about two extra months to find out now.

Are you upset Bruno got pushed back?

50 Must-See Movies of 2009

UPDATE: The list below was written in January of 2009. I suggest checking out our new list, 65 Must See Movies of 2010. Click the image below to see:

So 2008 is over, come on, it’s time to move on. Here are 50 great reasons to go to the theater this year:

January

My Bloody Valentine 3-D (Jan 16th)

Synopsis: After surviving a fatal accident that claimed the lives of five of men in a mine shaft, Harry Warden performed a horrific killing spree on Valentines night in the town of Harmony, killing 22 people before he was shot to death.

Why You Should See It: Early screening reports have said there is more sex, limbs, and buckets of blood than one can handle. The 3-D gimmick is the only reason this is on my list. If implemented right it should be a great time at the movies.

Watchmen’s Fate To Be Decided January 20th

The LA Times say:

Lawyers for 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. have agreed to let a federal judge decide whether Warner Bros. will be allowed to release Watchmen on March 6, forgoing a jury trial that could have put the high-profile film’s future into even longer limbo.

In court papers filed Monday with U.S. District Judge Gary A. Feess, attorneys for Fox and Warner Bros. jointly said they would let the judge decide Jan. 20 whether Fox could block the film’s theatrical distribution as Fox has been seeking all along as part of its copyright infringement lawsuit against Warner Bros.

I really hope they can come to a decision in time. If this doesn’t work out Watchmen could be delayed months!

Do you think Watchmen will be delayed? or can we enjoy it on March 6th?

Netflix Movie Delayed? Get A Free Rental.

Netflix recently changed the DVD shipping process when your first choice movie is not available at the shipping center nearest you.

“We have 55 shipping centers throughout the U.S., including Anchorage, Alaska and Honolulu, Hawaii. Previously, if the movie you wanted was not in stock locally, we sent it from another shipping center. Since this DVD was shipped from farther away, it took longer to arrive and you could end up without a DVD for a few days. This was especially inconvenient for our members on 1-disc plans.

Now,

if your first choice is not available in your local shipping center, we immediately send the next locally available movie in your Queue, and whenever possible, we also send your first choice from another part of the country.

We want you to receive DVDs as quickly as possible, so we’re taking this extra step to ensure you have another movie to enjoy as a complimentary extra DVD rental if your first choice will be delayed.

This change took effect Dec 11, 2008 and applies to all Netflix members.”

This sounds great to me, just add more Watch Instantly titles so I can stream them to my 360!
