The ‘Arrested Development’ Movie Is Dead

Time for our bi-weekly (and unfortunately last) update on the heavily anticipated, on-and-off Arrested Development movie. It’s “not going to happen.”

David Cross spoke with TV Squad for his upcoming comedy special, David Cross: Bigger and Blackerer and had this to say: Read the full story

First Episode of ‘Todd Margaret’ Online: Featuring David Cross, Will Arnett and Spike Jonze

Over in England a new series has been picked up starring David Cross (Arrested Development) and his co-star from that same show Will Arnett. The show is titled The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret and has Cross working in a business office under the watch of Arnett. The show almost feels like a hybrid between Arrested Development and The Office, although that could tentatively change. Also featured in it is Spike Jonze, director of Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Where the Wild Things Are. Apparently, however, this may only be for the pilot episode and will not carry over when the series begins production past this initial pilot.

The full first episode can be viewed right below, thanks to The Playlist. What incentive do you need to watch it besides the fact that it stars David Cross, Will Arnett, and Spike Jonze? I should hope nothing more.

What do you think of this pilot? Would you want to watch the rest of the series?

[Review] Year One

Year One 2

Year One is a hit-or-miss comedy that almost skids by due to distinct character work and the satirical tone. Director Harold Ramis once delivered a string of comedy classics, from Caddyshack to Vacation to Groundhog Day. Unfortunately, this does not live up to that standard by any means.

The film follows two best friends named Zed and Oh, played by Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda) and Michael Cera (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) respectively, who are both outcasts in their tribe. Zed is the clumsy hunter who wants to do more with his life while Oh is a gatherer who is fine with his path, only wishing he could be with the girl he loves. After being banished from their tribe, the two head off on a new adventure that takes them to places they have never imagined. On their journey they discover new inventions and odd characters that help them a long their trip. After a series of mishaps, including becoming slaves, they must battle to protect the woman they desire in the middle of distressful situations.

Year One Super Bowl Spot

yearonesuperbowlspot

We brought you an extended clip yesterday, but here is a completely different Super Bowl Spot for the Harold Ramis comedy Year One starring Jack Black, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd, and David Cross. Check it out below from Firstshowing or in HD on Youtube:

Plot: When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Black and Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.

I liked both the clip and this TV spot. I definitely think this will be one of the better comedies of the year and I’m looking forward to it quite a bit.

Year One hits theaters June 19th, 2009.

Do you like the Super Bowl spot for Year One?

First Look at Jack Black and Michael Cera in ‘Year One’

Here is an extended Super Bowl clip (brought to you by Firstshowing) of the new Harold Ramis comedy Year One, starring Jack Black, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd and David Cross. Check it out below:

Plot: When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Black and Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.

I think the clip looks hilarious. It features four of my current favorite comedic actors so I really can’t ask for more. I wonder if the Super Bowl spot will be different though and more like a trailer.

Year One hits theaters June 19th, 2009.

Arrested Development Movie Moves Forward + Documentary Planned

A couple of interesting tidbits on the much-sought-after Arrested Development movie:

  • Cinematical reports Series creator Mitch Hurwitz was out promoting his new animated show Sit Down, Shut Up and he provided a much-needed update with regards to a big-screen Arrested Development outing. Hurwitz says, “We want to do it, we have a deal more or less in place from Fox Searchlight, and we’re kind of getting all the actors on board.” Here’s what Hurwitz and the gang have planned plot-wise for the film: “We have a story, which is basically Valkyrie meets Hotel for Dogs.”
  • ReelMovieNews reports when asked about Cera’s status for the film, Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz told E! Online that he hopes George-Michael Bluth can be a part of the movie, as he’s “just trying to get all the actors on board.” Jason Bateman talked about Cera; “I know he’s thinking about it and we’re all awaiting some finality to all of that so Mitch can get writing. You’d have to get [Michael] on the phone to get his answer about whether he’s going to come back and do it or not,” Bateman said. “He’s certainly not said that he won’t do it. I think Michael is clearly the guy that has come out of Arrested Development with a very big plate, so I think he’s trying to really give some responsible thought to what makes sense for him to do with his career. The guy is 20 years old and I’m sure he doesn’t want to screw up this opportunity.”
  • An Arrested Development Documentary is also in the works, by Los Angeles super fans Neil + Jeff. Their website explains: ” The overall goal of the documentary is to provide awareness and education of this brilliant, witty and original comedy. We are looking to interview viewers, cast, crew and any other industry figures that are fans or critics of the show.” It comes out this summer. Here is a preview:
  • Movieweb reports Hurwtiz’s new show, the animated comedy, Sit Down, Shut Up is joining the Sunday Animation Domination lineup, premieres Sunday, April 19 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.  It focuses on the dysfunctional faculty and staff at a high school in a small Florida fishing town as they strive to do anything…but teach. It’s based on the hit live-action Australian series with animation set against a live-action backdrop, the series lampoons modern society while exposing the dreams, flaws and struggling humanity of our first and most formative authority figures: teachers. The series features a dream team cast of voice talent including Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Will Forte, Tom Kenny, Nick Kroll, Cheri Oteri, Kenan Thompson and Henry Winkler.
  • David Cross explains why AD was canceled in 30 seconds:

So it looks like they do have a deal in place, but the obvious joke means no solid screenplay yet, or they just don’t want to reveal it. Let’s hope Cera makes his decision and gets the ball rolling on the film. The documentary looks interesting and I look forward to Sit Down, Shut Up.

What do you think of all this AD news?

50 Must-See Movies of 2009

UPDATE: The list below was written in January of 2009. I suggest checking out our new list, 65 Must See Movies of 2010. Click the image below to see:

So 2008 is over, come on, it’s time to move on. Here are 50 great reasons to go to the theater this year:

January

My Bloody Valentine 3-D (Jan 16th)

Synopsis: After surviving a fatal accident that claimed the lives of five of men in a mine shaft, Harry Warden performed a horrific killing spree on Valentines night in the town of Harmony, killing 22 people before he was shot to death.

Why You Should See It: Early screening reports have said there is more sex, limbs, and buckets of blood than one can handle. The 3-D gimmick is the only reason this is on my list. If implemented right it should be a great time at the movies.
