The Hollywood Reporter has informed us that both Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie are in talks to adapt Ron Rash’s novel “Serena.” Set in 1929, the novel follows newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton as they travel through mountains in the northeast to create a timber empire. George has been fathering an illegitimate child for quite some time at this point, and when Serena learns that she cannot bear a child herself, she hatches a plan to murder the boy that George has fathered without her. A month ago we reported that Darren Aronofsky may be off the “ultra-violent” Robocop reboot, due to MGM wanting to go 3D with project. An auteur like Darren Aronosfky is not “interested in gimmicks” and he moved on to Black Swan, which comes out later this year. Now ShockTilYouDrop talked to Wolfman screenwriter David Self, who had this to say about the project: Read the full story
Remember how Avatar is currently raking in more money (and it just set the China opening day record) than Fox has ever seen? I’m sure one can account a whole lot of that gross to the 3D aspect and now we are seeing studios clamoring away at making their next movie in 3D. We have seen this with Warner Brothers and Robin Hood, Universal and Clash of the Titans, and MGM and The Cabin In The Woods. Now MGM is at it again with Darren Aronofsky’s Robocop. Imagine an indie auteur that only makes films his way and 3D technology. Yeah, I don’t see that working well either. A writer from Robocop Archive (via The Playlist) had this to say about the project: Read the full story
Fox Searchlight to be exact, this as reported by Slash Film. And the project is Darren Aronofsky’s sci-fi/psychological ballet drama starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. It’s been floating around for a while now, and it’s sensible that Searchlight would buy Aronofsky’s next project after The Wrestler, which both made back its budget and brought Mickey Rourke back into the spotlight after two decades or bad decisions.
We reported additional cast members added to the project yesterday, all the more reason to be excited about this ambitious, strange film to be made by one the most ambitious and stranger auteurs out there right now.
Slash Film offers: “We’ve heard from the beginning that the film would shoot this fall in NYC, and Reuters is saying it will go ‘before the end of the year’.”
The sooner the better, and under Searchlight’s watch this could something to look at come next winter awards season.
What do you think of Black Swan? Darren Aronofsky?
/Film has reported that there are a few new additions to Darren Aronofsky’s supernatural drama Black Swan. Vincent Cassel, Winona Ryder, and Barbara Hershey join Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman set in the story centered around New York City ballet. Portman stars as Nina, “a veteran ballerina who finds herself locked in to a competitive showdown with a rival dancer named Lilly, played by Kunis. As their big performance heats up Nina is not sure whether Lilly is real, or a apparition. /Film highlights exactly where the rest of the cast falls: Read the full story
A story at the Hollywood Reporter is telling us that Darren Aronofsky’s (Requiem for A Dream, The Wrestler) next film will not be his proposed RoboCop remake/sequel/reboot or whatever, and will actually be a film he’s had in development since 2007 called Black Swan. Also emerging from this story is that Natalie Portman is set to star in the lead role.

Variety reports that Christian Bale and David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) have been attached to Fighter, previously set to be directed by Darren Aronofsky. Russell will now direct Bale and Mark Wahlberg in the story about Boston fighter “Irish” Mickey Ward. Bale will play Dicky Eklund, a real life boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded after a run of drugs and crime. He will help his half-brother Ward in a Rocky-like rise to world lightweight champion. Matt Damon and Brad Pitt have also been previously attached, but have dropped out. Production is supposed to start in July, but negotiations are still being worked out.
