With auteur Terrence Malick’s fifth film in as many decades coming out this November, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn as father and son respectively (living in different generations of course), it begs the question: what kind of father will Pitt play?
Apparently not a very good one, a role that could be a refreshing, villainous departure for the perennial movie star cum character actor.
Here’s the verbose (pseudo) synopsis:

Despite Avatar dominating the box office this Christmas season, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes managed to do very well, making almost $400 million worldwide. Like the film was pleading for at the end, it looks like a sequel is being fast-tracked, producer Joel Silver told LA Times. Ritchie was previously attached to an adaptation of the DC Comic Lobo, but that is being handed off to another director. Silver says:

While Summit Entertainment has staked (sorry) their claim in the current vampire world with the Twilight films, which many have accused of leading the pack of a cheapening of vampire stories in general, it looks as though they may find a way to redeem themselves with a new project. Brad Pitt’s Plan B entertainment is eying a new film about the legendary Vlad the Impaler (guess what he liked to do), who many state was the inspiration for the original Dracula novel. This comes from THR, via Cinematical. The script is written by former actor Charlie Hunnam, and negotiations are in place with music video director Anthony Mandler. Both sources indicate he even prepared a “sizzle reel” for Summit, which they were reportedly greatly impressed by. Read the full story

About a month ago we reported that the supposedly scrapped Brad Pitt-starring Moneyball was revived and looking for directors. The two rumored directors were Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) and Bennett Miller (Capote). Variety reports that the latter has got the job. The script, written by Steve Zaillian (American Gangster, Schindler’s List) and Aaron Sorkin (Charlie Wilson’s War, The West Wing) tells the true story “based on Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, who defied conventional wisdom and even his own scouts by fielding a baseball team of castoffs to create the ultimate underdogs en route to one of the most unlikely winning streaks in the history of professional sports.” It is also reported the budget of the film will likely be downsized, but no reports of a start date yet.
What do you think about Miller directing Moneyball? Would you have liked to see someone else?

Japanese television shows are known for crazy cultural antics, very unusual games and a flavor of humor that can only be fully appreciated with a full understanding of Japanese culture and language. Japanese game shows are not that well known for guest starring high profile Hollywood players like Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino, but if you’ve been keeping up with your Japanese food shows, as I know you all have, you would have seen the inglourious duo in action in Japan.
On the show, Pitt elaborated on a comment made by Tarantino to MTV earlier this month where Tarantino stated that Pitt was the one pushing for another installment of Inglourious Basterds. Pitt stated on the show that he is “trying to get him [Tarantino] to make a prequel. Two of them.”
Pitt has enough Hollywood clout that he can probably push anything he wants into production, but contending with the eccentric personality of Tarantino will probably require him to sell it to QT first. Considering the success of Basterds, it’s pretty likely that at some point we will see a prequel or sequel, but the lackluster response to questioning and general attitude of indifference from Tarantino really only says one thing: It’s not on the books yet. It seems like Tarantino doesn’t want to rush into another installment, and while some people may be chomping at the bit for more, that is definitely going to help the project if it actually happens.
In light of financial problems industry wide, the standard attitude has been to fully exploit anything and everything that successfully returns a buck. Sequels are being made to films that never should have had one and sequels are being planned while the original film can still be found on the cutting room floor. I am glad to see Tarantino, who I would always expect this from, to make artistic decisions as opposed to business decisions.
And in other news, I can’t cussing wait for another Inglourious Basterds.
Do you think QT can pull off a prequel with the same success?

THR’s Risky Biz Blog has reported that Brad Pitt’s Plan B and the Indian Reliance BIG Entertainment firm have partnered together to pick up the rights to Capcom’s upcoming Dark Void videogame. They mention Pitt could very well star as the lead, acargo pilot named Will who, after crashing in the Bermuda Triangle, ends up in a parallel universe where a band of humans must fight an alien threat they had long been thought extinct. Will and the other humans are outmanned but have a number of weapons and powers to help them beat back the alien incursion. No writers have been hired for the project yet. Read the full story
