Following in the footsteps of Steven Soderbergh, Cary Fukunaga, David Fincher, David Lynch, and more, writer-director Woody Allen is flocking to the medium of television. Amazon Studios announced today that the prolific creative will be writing and directing every episode of a full first season for a new series produced by the company. There’s no details yet on what the plot or casting may hold, but it’ll hit Prime Instant Video in the US, UK and Germany in 2016.

“I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this,” Allen says. Price, meanwhile, adds, “Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series. From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.”

One imagines this fairly substantial development will interrupt his one-film-a-year routine (the next being a Joaquin Phoenix– and Emma Stone-led drama), but we’ll have to wait and see. As we await more details, check out our retrospective on his career here.
