It may be foolish to consider a film starring Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoë Saldana and Sam Shepard a potential sleeper hit, but with a release date almost exactly a month away, we’d imagine at this point Out of the Furnace would be arriving with a bit more buzz. Hopefully that will come with a world premiere set for this weekend at AFI Fest, and to gear up for the event, today brings our first clip.

Coming from Crazy Heart‘s Scott Cooper, the film tracks Bale taking the law into his own hands, going down a path for justice after his brother gets in deep with dangerous people. This first clip reveals what looks to be an early, heated encounter between Bale’s character and Curtis DeGroat (Harrelson). It’s a tense, minute-long piece that certainly has us excited for what’s in store. Check it out below and the most recent trailer here if you missed it.

From Scott Cooper, the critically-acclaimed writer and director of Crazy Heart, comes a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance, and justice. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so—with nothing left to lose—Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother.

Out of the Furnace opens on December 6th.
