Putting Tom Hanks at the center of the harrowing 2009 Somalian pirate hijacking, our review called Paul Greengrass‘ Captain Phillips “a thinly scoped story with tried-and-true themes,” but said “the acting turns it into a surprisingly captivating story of heroism.” One can now get a preview of our lead performance, as today brings our first clips from the film.

Revealing the initial steps of the hijacking, Hanks’ character instructs his crew to let loose the hoses that attempt to prevent the attack, all while he’s firing flare guns. In the second, tense clip, we can see their defensive methods fail, as the pirates board the ship. With a release set for next week, Sony is attempting to get the buzz going a bit earlier, as the film will have select sneak preview screenings this Saturday evening (October 5th), so check your local listings. In the meantime, one can get a preview below with both clips.

Captain Phillips arrives on October 11th.
