The first clip from Natalie Portman’s feature film directorial debut A Tale of Love and Darkness, which recently debuted in Cannes, has now arrived online. The project is based on a bestselling book of the same name by author Amos Oz, chronicling Oz’s early life during the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the beginning of the new formed Jewish state.

In the clip we see the director Portman playing the mother of Oz telling him the story of the two monks. What is most striking about this clip isn’t Portman nor is the son, rather the impressive technical approach from the first-time director. It clearly shows how much Portman values the source material, yet whether there is too much devotion remains to be seen. Check out the clip below.

Based on Amos Oz’s international best-seller, A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS is the story of Oz’s youth at the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel. The film details young Amos’ relationship with his mother and his birth as a writer, looking at what happens when the stories we tell, become the stories we live.

A Tale of Love and Darkness premiered at Cannes.
