Ever since we got the official trailer back in early November, we’ve received no shortage of preview-length footage for Steven Soderbergh‘s Side Effects: in addition to this one-minute-long look which hit earlier in January, we got an international cut just yesterday, although we were quick to warn you that the actual film is very different from what the marketing material is putting down. And with that in mind, perhaps this minute-long clip from Yahoo! — the first official clip released for the film thus far — will make for a more authentic selling-point than any of the previous trailers have.
The clip features Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara, and certainly has that mustardy tint that’s been characteristic of recent Soderbergh films. Rounding out the cast’s primary quartet are Jude Law (who did some fiery work in Soderbergh’s Contagion) and Catherine Zeta-Jones (ditto in Soderbergh’s earlier Traffic). Meanwhile, Scott Z. Burns, who has written very well for Soderbergh in the past (The Informant!, Contagion), is back on screenwriting duties here, and I’d be surprised if the story’s pharmaceutical elements don’t at least slightly recall the writing-directing duo’s 2011 collaboration.
Check out the clip in its entirety below, as well as a reminder of the film’s brief synopsis. As much as I’d personally like to prolong Soderbergh’s forthcoming hiatus from feature filmmaking, I’m still chomping at the bit to finally get a look at this one when it lands in theaters on February 8.
Synopsis:
SIDE EFFECTS is a provocative thriller about Emily and Martin (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum), a successful New York couple whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by Emily’s psychiatrist (Jude Law)—intended to treat anxiety—has unexpected side effects.

One of the most highly anticipated films of the Cannes Film Festivals was unveiled this morning to a divisive response, Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Only God Forgives. With this year’s Cannes Film Festival halfway done, one of the clear highlights is Coens‘ 1960′s-set folk music tale Inside Llewyn Davis.
