Update: Vulture has given us another update, that David Cronenberg will in fact be directing this sequel. Check out the original story below.

After working together five years ago for David Cronenberg‘s Eastern Promises, the director re-teamed stars Vincent Cassel and Viggo Mortensen for his follow-up A Dangerous Method last year. Now, they are planning to reunite again for a sequel to his 2007 crime drama, but without Cronenberg at the helm.

Vulture reports that Cassel is in talks for the follow-up, which we’ve heard about on and off again for three years and counting. And despite Cronenberg and gang “all liking” Steven Knight‘s script, the director is reportedly not returning. Instead, Knight is the choice to get behind the camera and one can check out a brief synopsis of the film below, which continues directly where the last one left off:

Follows the incompetent underboss Kirill (Cassel) thinking that he and his henchman driver Nikolai (Mortensen) really have inherited the throne from his crime-lord father, without knowing that Nikolai is actually a clandestine agent working undercover in Russia’s federal security service.

Knight’s currently making his feature directorial debut on the Jason Statham-thriller Hummingbird, so we’ll have to see how that pans out. But Cronenberg, with his visceral spurts of violence and excellent character-building in the original, will certainly be missed. The short synopsis makes for what could be a great film, let’s just hope Knight’s the right man for the job.

Eastern Promises 2 is expected to begin production early 2013.
